🌟Patient Spotlight: Zara🌟

Meet Zara, a beautiful 2-year-old Maine C**n with a larger-than-life personality

Zara loves having her neck scratched, exploring outside in the grass, and making sure her family knows exactly when it's mealtime 😹Her meow is loud...but somehow her purr is even louder.

Like many Maine C**ns, Zara is affectionate, social, and wonderful with her family. She's the kind of cat that wants to be part of everything going on and has no problem making her presence known. Her family absolutely adores her, and honestly, we can see why. Between her sweet personality, fluffy good looks, and extra loud purr motor, Zara is impossible not to love 💕

Fun Fact: a lot of the "doctor things" in vet med are actually done by technicians 👀

Drawing blood? Placing IV catheters? Taking X-rays? Monitoring anesthesia? Our technicians do these tasks every single day and have a ton of hands-on experience doing them well💉✨

The doctors still run the show medically, but veterinary medicine is definitely a team sport 😂

🐾Pet Arthritis Awareness Month: Let's Talk About Relief Options🐾

If your pet is slowing down, stiff after rest, or not wanting to play like they used to, arthritis could be the reason. The good news? There are safe, effective ways to help them feel better💙

Here are some of the most common medications we use:

💊Carprofen
A commonly prescribed NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) that helps with pain and inflammation
✔Requires bloodwork before starting
✔Monitoring bloodwork every 6 months to keep liver and kidneys safe

💊Galliprant
Another NSAID option that's often gentler on the liver and kidneys.
✔Once daily dosing
✔Great option for long-term use in many pets

💊Gabapentin
✔Used for nerve related pain and often added to enhance comfort
✔Works well as part of a multi-drug plan

💉Librela
A once-monthly injection for dogs that targets pain at the source
Reduces pain signals
Many pets show noticeable improvement in mobility and comfort

💉Solensia
A once-monthly injection for cats that also works to reduce pain signals
Improves pain and quality of life in cats

❎What to avoid
Please do NOT give over-the-counter medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or Tylenol. These can be dangerous for pets.
⚠️If given before your visit, your pet may need a "washout" period before we can safely start prescription medication to avoid serious side effects like stomach ulcers.

✨Every pet is different, and arthritis treatment is not one-size-fits-all. We're here to build a plan that keeps your pet comfortable, safe, and enjoying life.

Let's help your pet get back to doing what they love🐕🐈💙

🐾Natural Disaster Animal Preparedness Day🐾

Emergencies can happen fast - but being prepared can make all the difference four you and your pets.
Here are a few simple tips, based on guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association, to help keep your pets safe:

📍Know your risks
Think about what emergencies are most likely in your area (storms, floods, tornadoes, fires) and plan ahead

🎒Build a pet emergency kit
Have everything ready to grab and go. Your kit should include:
• At least 3 days of food and water
• A first aid kit
• Extra supplies (leashes, collars, medications)
• A recent photo of your pet
•Your pet's microchip number and ID info

🚗Make an evacuation plan
Know where you can go before an emergency happens:
• Pet-friendly hotels or shelters
• Friends of family who can take you in
• Keep medical and vaccine records easy to access for travel

Being prepared now can save valuable time - and reduce stress - when it matters most.

💙Take a few minutes today to make a plan for your pets.

Here at Walnut Creek Vet we have a plan in place to help the community in the event of a disaster. If we are able to be open, and you are the victim of a natural disaster, please call and we will help you as best as we can.

🌟Patient Spotlight: Maxwell🌟

Meet Maxwell, a 6.5 year old kitty with a big personality and an even bigger heart 🐾💙

Max was originally a stray in his neighborhood, but when his family noticed he was getting too skinny, they took him in - and he adjusted to indoor life immediately. Safe to say, he knew he had found his people.

His favorite way to cuddle is extra special: Max climbs onto mom's chest, puts a paw on each shoulder, and stares right in to her eyes 🥺

A little over a year ago, Max started having severe mouth pain and stopped eating. After another clinic was unable to find answers, his family brought him to Walnut Creek Vet Hospital. Together, we worked to get Max feeling better, including placing a temporary feeding tube wile finding the right medications to keep him comfortable enough to eat on his own again.

Now, about a year and a half after having his feeding tube removed, Max is back to being his cuddly, loving self - except, of course, when it's time for his medications 😹

These days, he loves:
🐾Forcing the dogs to cuddle with him
🐾Looking out the windows
🐾Spending time with his one and only cat friend... our clinic cat Lt. Dan

Maxwell's story is such a wonderful reminder of how resilient and loving pets can be, and we feel honored to have been part of his journey. 💙

🐾Pet Anxiety Awareness Week🐾

Juist like people, pets can feel anxious too - and it can show up in ways you might not expect.

Recognizing the signs early can help your pet feel safer, calmer, and more comfortable 💙

😩Common signs of anxiety in dogs and cats:
• Pacing or restlessness
• Excessive barking or meowing
• Destructive behavior
• Hiding or trying to escape
• Panting or drooling(dogs)
• Changes in appetite
• Accidents in the house or outside the litter box

⚠️What can cause anxiety?
• Loud noises (storms, fireworks)
• Being left alone
• Changes in routine or environment
• Travel or vet visits

💡How you can help:
• Keep a consistent routine
• Provide a safe, quiet space
• Use enrichment (toys, puzzles, lick mats)
• Try calming aids if recommended
• Talk to your vet about options for more severe anxiety. We may be able to refer you to a specialized board certified veterinary behaviorist.

You know your pet best - if something feels off, it's worth looking into.

👉Call or text us to schedule an appointment if you're noticing signs of anxiety. We can help find a plan that works for your pet. Don't wait to refill your pet's anxiety medication, call ahead of time so we can be sure to have it ready before a stressful event.

Let's work together to keep your pets feeling safe and supported 💙
