On August 14, 2025, President Donald Trump marked the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act by signing a proclamation aimed at strengthening the program.

Trump highlighted the passage of the "One Big Beautiful Bill," which will exempt 88% of Social Security beneficiaries from paying federal income taxes on their benefits. The legislation also introduces a temporary tax deduction of up to \$6,000 for individuals aged 65 and older, though higher-income earners will face limitations.

While the administration promotes the tax break, experts note it doesn’t fully eliminate taxes on benefits, but instead offers a temporary deduction. The Tax Policy Center points out that many Social Security recipients, particularly those with low or high incomes, will see little to no benefit from the change.

In a move to curb fraud, Trump also announced the removal of about 275,000 undocumented immigrants from the Social Security system, with the Social Security Administration confirming that records have been updated accordingly. However, it remains unclear whether these individuals were receiving benefits or contributing fraudulently.

While the new tax measures have received praise, experts caution that they could speed up the projected insolvency of the Social Security trust fund, which is now expected to run dry by 2032. Without further legislative action, beneficiaries could face a 23% reduction in benefits.

As lawmakers continue to address this issue, the future of Social Security remains a key concern for policymakers.
