When we first met Sully, he was lying on his side, completely unable to move or stand up on his own. He required spinal surgery urgently to give him the best chance at recovery.

We're happy to say that Sully strutted right back into our clinic for his post-op recheck exam! It's always rewarding to see our patients improve this much following treatment, which is no doubt a result of the effort and patience provided by families throughout their recovery.

We hope that Sully continues to improve, and we look forward to seeing an even bigger smile on his face at his next recheck!

Our staff has been working so hard recently, taking on extra emergency cases and staying late to ensure that our patients receive proper and timely treatment.

It's important to indulge in a coffee break every now and then; Duke certainly thinks so, but only if we bring him back a Pup Cup!

We would like to thank Smokey and his family for such a lovely and generous gift!

Smokey found himself unable to use his back legs well and required surgery to hopefully get him walking again. Here he is posing in front of the beautiful wooden flag his dad gifted us right before being discharged!

We are always so appreciative of the ways in which our pet parents say Thank You. 💙 Smokey, we wish you the very best as you heal and recover at home!

Gain insight into our surgical procedures: The video begins by highlighting essential precautionary and warning measures. Dr. William Bush and resident Dr. Chris Hollingsworth perform a ventral slot (cervical) surgery, while RVT Mika carefully monitors anesthesia, vital signs and manages the preparation of surgical instruments. 💙 🧠

💉 September 28th is World Rabies Day 💉

Rabies is one of the most well-known neurological diseases that can affect any mammal, including humans, dogs, and cats. Once symptoms start, rabies is nearly 100% fatal; luckily, this disease is also 100% preventable with vaccination.

If unvaccinated, your pet could be at risk if they come into contact with wildlife or other cats/dogs; even indoor pets can be at risk if they escape or if wildlife enters the house.

Some signs of rabies can include:
🔵 Fearfulness or loss of fear
🔵 Aggression or unpredictable behavior
🔵 Hypersalivation
🔵 Difficulty walking
🔵 Paralysis
🔵 ...And other unexplained neurological signs.

Help protect your pet and others by scheduling your pet's rabies vaccine with your primary veterinarian today!

As temperatures cool and routines change, fall brings a few seasonal hazards for pets to keep in mind:

🍁 Keep pets away from mushrooms and other unknown plants they may find outdoors.

🎃 Keep pumpkins, decorations, and seasonal treats out of reach. Some foods and decorations can be dangerous if swallowed.

🕷️ Continue flea and tick prevention. Parasites remain active in many areas even as temperatures drop.

🌡️ Watch the weather. Cooler temperatures can be uncomfortable or dangerous, especially for small, senior, or short coated pets.

A little preparation can help keep your pet safe and healthy throughout the season. And if your pet gets into something they should not, our emergency team is here when you need us.

A massive shoutout to our Leesburg team for performing THREE spinal surgeries over two days!

Spinal discs can herniate at any time, meaning that our pets don't necessarily plan their ailments and injuries to occur "conveniently" for us. Many of our pet parents know this fact all too well, and we definitely experienced this when three of our patients herniated their discs all at once last week.

Thankfully, we were able to intervene quickly and give these pups the best chance at recovery. It was a tiring couple of days for everyone, but seeing how much better our patients feel afterward makes it all worth it. Sully—pictured here—even started to walk again the very next day!

Did you know that September is Animal Pain Awareness Month?

Specializing in neurology, we see a lot of diseases and injuries that result in pain to our furry family members. Sometimes signs of pain are obvious—yelping, groaning, and limping are a few examples.

But what are some other, more subtle indications of pain?
💥 Hiding or being less sociable
💥 Hesitating or refusing to use stairs, jump, or play
💥 Stiffness or changes in posture
💥 Increased clinginess, lethargy, or restlessness
💥 Irritability and aggression, especially when touched
💥 Excessive panting
💥 Increased licking, chewing, or grooming
💥 Having more accidents in the house or outside the litterbox
💥 Changes in facial expression (e.g., grimacing)
..and many more.

If your pet starts showing any of these signs, it's important to reach out to your primary veterinarian (or your established neurologist!) so they can be evaluated. Luckily, there are many treatments and pain medications that are available that could help your pet feel more comfortable. We all hope our animals can live their best lives, pain-free!

This week we celebrate ! This week is set aside to recognize and celebrate these important team members who perform a vital role in the health and well-being of our pets. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to recognize technicians’ tremendous contributions at BVNS and in the veterinary community.

Here just a few facts you may not know about the veterinary technician role (it would be impossible to list them all!):

☑️ Veterinary technicians handle many of the same responsibilities that nurses and other professionals perform for physicians in human medicine. Like veterinarians, veterinary technicians are trained to work with several species of animals.

☑️ Veterinary technicians are trained to: take and record vital signs, obtain and record patient case histories, perform laboratory tests, take and develop radiographs (x-rays), draw blood, collect stool samples, sterilize equipment and exam rooms, administer medications, injections, IV fluids and anesthesia, assist in dental cleanings, remove sutures, clean wounds, and change dressings.

☑️ In addition to direct contact with patients, veterinary technicians also work closely with our clients to communicate patient history, vital signs, test results, at-home care instructions, and much more!

We are so proud of our incredible team of veterinary technicians here at BVNS. Thank you for all of the tremendous work that you do! 💙
