Ma**er is here to remind you that we are still in the midst of allergy season, and if your dog is scratching, licking, chewing, or dealing with irritated skin, you may be wondering what’s going on.
A dermatology appointment can help uncover the root cause of your pet’s discomfort. Here’s what you can expect during a visit:
🐾 1. Questions About Your Pet’s History
Your veterinarian may ask:
• When did you first notice your dog itching?
• Are they scratching all over or in certain areas?
• When was the last dose of flea and tick prevention, and what kind was it?
• What bathing products do you use for your dog?
• What food or treats is your dog eating?
🐾 2. A Full-Skin Exam
Your veterinarian will carefully examine your dog’s ears, skin folds, feet, and nails. They’ll also look for hair loss, redness, bumps, and other changes that may provide clues.
🐾 3. Additional Testing, If Needed
Based on their findings, your veterinarian may recommend bloodwork, skin testing or a biopsy, or a diet trial to help identify underlying conditions.
🐾 4. Building a Treatment Plan
Once the underlying cause is better understood, your veterinarian can develop a treatment plan. This may include oral medications, antibacterial or antifungal therapies, supplements, medicated shampoos, or special diets.
