“Why does my cat paw smooth surfaces like the stove, dishwasher, or shower walls… but not actually scratch them?”
🐾Why Cats Do That 🐾
Believe it or not, this is actually pretty common cat behavior 😹
Cats paw smooth surfaces for several reasons:
🐾 Instinct
Even though they aren’t using their claws, the pawing motion mimics the instinctive behavior of “testing” or interacting with their environment. Cats are naturally curious little scientists.
🐾 Scent Marking
Cats have scent glands in their paws. Sometimes they’re subtly marking an area as “theirs” without scratching.
🐾 Texture & Sound Fascination
Smooth surfaces like shower walls, dishwashers, and stoves can feel cool, slick, or make interesting sounds when tapped. Some cats simply enjoy the sensory experience.
🐾 Attention-Seeking or Routine
If you’ve ever reacted to it (“What are you doing?!” 😂), they may have learned it gets your attention. Cats are very smart about repeating behaviors that get a response.
🐾 Hunting/Water Curiosity
Shower walls and sinks especially can trigger curiosity about water movement, reflections, or tiny droplets we don’t even notice.
And honestly… some cats are just delightfully weird. 🤣
As long as they aren’t obsessively doing it, damaging their paws, or showing signs of anxiety, it’s usually harmless and just one of those quirky cat behaviors that make us laugh.
Now tell us…
What weird smooth surface is YOUR cat obsessed with? 👀🐱
(Bonus points for videos because we KNOW some of these cats are dramatic 😂)
