Big Jake is still available! 8 years young and just a quiet soul. Kind of keeps to himself, but enjoys pets. Want to let him live out his life on a comfy couch?? Based off of his rough past, he’s earned it!

His adoption fee is $90 and he is fully vetted. Reach out to meet Jake!

Would you share Jake for us??

🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM SANGAMON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL & ADOPTION CENTER 🐱

We believe in being transparent with our community, so we want to let you know that feline panleukopenia (panleuk) has been identified in our shelter.

Panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus in cats, especially kittens and unvaccinated cats. It can spread through direct contact as well as contaminated litter boxes, bedding, bowls, clothing, hands and other surfaces. Cats can also appear healthy while incubating the virus.

Because of how easily this virus can spread, we are asking the public to please avoid bringing stray cats into the shelter unless it is absolutely necessary. We understand that finding a stray cat can be concerning, and we appreciate everyone who wants to help. Right now, however, bringing additional cats into the shelter can increase the risk of exposure for them and for the cats already in our care.

💙 If you find a healthy-looking stray cat, please contact us first at 217-535-3065 so we can discuss the safest options.

🏠 WE NEED FOSTERS!

If you are able to temporarily foster a cat or kitten that is not showing signs of illness, you could make a HUGE difference right now.

Getting healthy cats out of the shelter and into safe foster homes can help reduce crowding and exposure while we work through this situation.

If you are interested in fostering through Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center, please contact us about becoming a foster.

You can also apply to foster through our friends at the Animal Protective League.

📚 Want to learn more about panleukopenia?
The ASPCA has a detailed explanation of the disease, how it spreads, signs to watch for and prevention:
👉 ASPCApro — Feline Panleukopenia
https://www.aspcapro.org/topics-shelter-medicine-common-diseases/feline-panleukopenia

We know this may be concerning, but we believe our community deserves honest information about what is happening in the shelter. Our staff are taking precautions and working to protect the cats in our care.

Thank you for understanding, sharing this information and—most importantly—helping us keep more cats safe. ❤️🐾

Lyra has officially decided that eyesight is optional when you’re this cute. 🧡

She may not be able to see what’s around her, but she’s learning her world in her own way. Familiar voices, favorite spots, little routines, and the people she trusts all help her know exactly where she is.

And honestly? Lyra isn’t sitting around feeling sorry for herself. She’s busy being a cat. 🐾

She still wants comfort. She still wants love. She still deserves a home that sees her, not just the fact that she’s blind.

Her forever person won’t need to be perfect. Just patient, kind, and willing to let Lyra learn her new home at her own pace.

Some cats need you to look a little closer before you realize just how special they are.

Lyra is one of them. 🧡

Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center is very full and asking for the community's assistance. Please consider adopting or fostering directly from SCAC or from a local rescue like Animal Protective League who regularly pulls from SCAC.

The kitties pictured are just a few of the MANY adorables currently waiting for their forever homes. Everyone goes home spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated appropriate to age. The county is currently discounting all adoption fees to just $35 each. We highly recommend two! Adopting two provides double the joy for you and provides two fur babies with a lifelong playmate and snuggle buddy, which greatly reduces anxiety and boredom. It is sincerely a win-win-win!!!
