🐾 LARYNGEAL PARALYSIS: WHEN BREATHING BECOMES A STRUGGLE 🫁

Did you know that the larynx (voice box) plays an important role in keeping your pet’s airway open while they breathe? When the nerves controlling the larynx stop working properly, the vocal folds may not open normally — a condition called laryngeal paralysis.

🐶 In dogs, common signs include:
• Noisy or raspy breathing
• Excessive panting
• A changed or hoarse bark
• Coughing or gagging
• Exercise intolerance
• Difficulty breathing, especially in hot weather
• Collapse in severe cases

🐱 In cats, laryngeal paralysis is less common, but it can also cause noisy breathing, voice changes, coughing, gagging, and respiratory distress.

⚠️ Why is it serious?
A narrowed airway makes it harder for your pet to get enough oxygen. Heat, stress, excitement, and exercise can make breathing even more difficult and may trigger a respiratory emergency.

🏥 Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause. Some pets can be managed with lifestyle changes and medications, while severe cases may require surgery to permanently improve airflow.
