Some dogs ask more of us. And somehow, they give us more than we ever imagined. ❤️

Josie and Enzo are both rescues with special needs. One is blind. One is deaf and partially blind. And living with them has challenged me to communicate differently, slow down, adapt, and become more intentional in ways I never could have anticipated.

It isn’t always easy. Love doesn’t erase the work, and rescue isn’t always the picture-perfect story we want it to be.

But these two have taught me that connection doesn’t require perfection. It requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to meet a dog where they are.

They’re not dogs I rescued just to give them a home.

They’re two of the reasons this house feels like one. 🐾

To everyone who has opened their heart to a dog who needed a little extra understanding, patience, or a different kind of commitment — this one’s for you.

You know the work. You know the love. And you know it’s worth it.

One of the most valuable things you can teach your dog is that it pays to be connected to you.

Not because you’re constantly calling their name, telling them what to do, or correcting every little thing. But because being near you, checking in, and choosing calm has value.

We reinforce the behaviors we want to see more of. And yes, calm energy can be reinforced, too. The key is knowing your dog. If praise, touch, or even a treat sends them into a higher state of excitement, we need to be thoughtful about how we reward them.

Sometimes the best reinforcement is quiet. Sometimes it’s simply allowing them to settle and letting that calm moment continue.

I have a partially blind and deaf dog, and a 9-month-old blind puppy. Neither needs to be micromanaged every second for us to share a peaceful space.

That doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from building trust, creating value in staying connected, and teaching our dogs that they don’t always need to be doing something.

The goal isn’t to control every moment. It’s to build a relationship that makes the right choices easier.

Be the calm in their storm. 🐾

The difference between living with a Pit Bull and two Australian Shepherds is NIGHT AND DAY. 😂❤️

Our pit bull is perfectly content doing her own thing. Meanwhile, the Aussies need to know where we are, what we’re doing, and whether we’ve made any suspicious movements without their supervision. 👀

Thankfully, we had our Aussies first. We learned early that this breed was developed to work closely with humans, anticipate movement, and keep their eyes on the job. And sometimes, that job apparently includes monitoring every move you make😂

But here’s the thing: understanding breed tendencies isn’t about putting dogs in a box. It’s about understanding what generations of breeding have made them naturally good at — and what they might struggle to switch off from.

We love them for exactly who they are. The key is learning to meet their needs, not expecting them all to experience the world the same way. 🐾❤️

Let’s talk about the dogs we fall in love with… and the dogs we’re actually prepared for. 🐾❤️

Australian Shepherds are gorgeous. German Shepherds are stunning. And that new Brad Pitt movie probably has a few people thinking about adding one to the family.

But every breed was developed with certain traits, instincts, and jobs in mind. Those instincts don’t disappear just because a dog lives in a suburban backyard.

The drive, energy, and intelligence that make these dogs incredible can also become challenging when their needs aren’t met.

This isn’t about shaming anyone. So many amazing caretakers put in the work every day. But sometimes, what we call a “behavior problem” is a dog crying out for more mental stimulation, appropriate outlets, structure, or understanding.

Love the breed. Understand the breed. Be honest about the lifestyle it requires.

Because the goal isn’t just to find a dog you love. It’s to build a life where that dog can thrive. ❤️🐶

If you’re new here, I’m really glad you found us. 🐾

Behind The Balanced Wag is a person who has learned some of life’s biggest lessons from dogs.

My own dogs have taught me that behavior is rarely as simple as it looks. That communication comes in many forms. And that sometimes, the best thing we can do for a dog is stop trying to change what we see and start understanding why it’s happening.

That’s the heart of my approach to training.

I believe in positive reinforcement, thoughtful structure, and building trust — not using fear or force to get compliance.

Because I don’t want you to simply teach your dog what to do. I want you to understand who your dog is.

To recognize their needs. To read their body language. To help them navigate a world that doesn’t always make sense to them.

And to feel confident doing it.

I’m genuinely humbled to see this community grow around these incredible creatures. My hope is that this space helps us all become a little more curious, a little more compassionate, and a whole lot better at understanding the dogs beside us.

😂📸 When you ask four dogs to pose for a photo and only three get the assignment…

Can you guess which one is deaf? 👀😂

Hint: He’s not looking at the camera, me, or even the other dogs. He’s busy licking the wall. 🤦‍♂️🤣

And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️

Training isn’t about perfect obedience. It’s about communication, trust, and meeting each dog where they are.

Sometimes that means hand signals. Sometimes it means patience. And sometimes the wall is just more interesting than you. 😂🐾

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s connection. 💙

You can be a referee without having an alpha attitude. 🤍

You don’t need intimidation, fear, or force to create harmony between your dogs. You need to learn how to listen.

A stiff body. A turned head. A subtle attempt to create space. These are all ways our dogs communicate.

When we learn to read their body language, we can step in when needed, give them space when appropriate, and help them make better decisions without forcing behavior.

I never want my dogs to make good choices because they’re afraid of what happens if they don’t. I want them to feel safe enough to make those choices because they trust me.

Real leadership isn’t about dominance. It’s about understanding, boundaries, and knowing when to step in and when to step back.

Because harmony isn’t built through fear. It’s built through trust. 🐾

My dogs are allowed on the furniture.

Not because I don’t believe in boundaries.
Not because I think they should have free rein to do whatever they want.

But because I believe living with dogs should be a two-way street.

If they can comfortably share the couch without being disruptive, possessive, destructive, or unable to settle, then why shouldn’t they enjoy it too?

There are things I expect from my dogs. And there are things I’m happy to give back to them.

Access. Comfort. Choice.
A place beside me.

Training isn’t about controlling every aspect of a dog’s life. It’s about teaching them how to exist successfully within ours.

And when they’ve earned that freedom, I want them to understand something:

This isn’t just my home. It’s theirs, too. 🐾

He’s deaf.

He can’t hear me call his name.
He can’t hear my voice tell him I’m proud of him.
He can’t hear the sound of me walking through the door.

But somehow… he knows.

He knows when I’m there.
He knows when I need him.
And when he sees me, he runs to me with his whole heart.

Enzo has taught me that communication was never really about words.

It’s about trust.
It’s about paying attention.
It’s about learning how to listen to someone who can’t speak your language.

I don’t need him to hear me.

I just hope he knows how deeply I hear him. ❤️

And every time he comes running back to me, I’m reminded that the strongest connections don’t always need a voice.

October is Pit Bull Awareness Month, and advocating for this incredibly special breed is something I don’t take lightly.

Because I know what it feels like to look at a dog and see so much more than a label.

You see a Pit Bull.
I see Josie.

A dog born blind who has never let the way she entered this world define what she could become.

I see a dog who trusts.
A dog who loves people with her entire heart.
A dog who explores, learns, plays, and finds joy in the smallest things.

Yes, Pit Bulls are powerful dogs. And that power deserves responsible ownership, thoughtful training, and respect.

But power does not equal poor character.
A breed does not tell you everything about the individual dog standing in front of you.

Too often, people are taught to see the breed before they ever see the dog.

Josie reminds me every day that there is so much more to see.

So this month, I’ll proudly stand beside the dogs who are misunderstood, judged, and too often overlooked.

You were taught to see the breed.
I want you to see the dog. 🐾
