How often do you REALLY listen to your dog? 🤔

Understanding your dog isn’t about teaching more commands. It’s about listening. It’s noticing the hesitation before they pull away. The yawn when they’re uncomfortable. The choice they make to move closer. The trust they offer when they feel safe.

Respect STARTS when we STOP asking, “How do I get my dog to do what I want?” and start asking, “What is my dog trying to tell me?”

Trust isn’t built through control.
It’s built through understanding.

The strongest relationships aren’t the ones where the dog always obeys.
They’re the ones where the dog feels heard.

Your dog has been studying you since the day you met.

Maybe today, it’s worth studying them. ❤️🐾

For me, balance in dog training isn’t about choosing between positive or negative reinforcement. It’s about taking a holistic approach and putting the dog’s needs first.

Dogs need physical exercise, mental enrichment, clear and fair guidance, and the security of feeling safe and loved. Leadership isn’t about “my way or the highway”—it’s about providing direction, consistency, and understanding.

The goal isn’t just to teach behaviors. It’s to take our responsibility as handlers to a deeper level by learning to recognize and meet the needs of the dog in front of us. That’s where real balance begins. 🐾

A blind rescue dog will teach you that life isn’t meant to be rushed. They don’t move through the world with certainty—they move with courage. Every step is a choice to trust, every unfamiliar sound a lesson in patience, every quiet moment an opportunity to connect.

Working with a blind dog has reminded me that strength isn’t always charging forward. Sometimes it’s stopping, listening, waiting, and letting someone find their own way back to you. It’s realizing that progress doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful.

Maybe that’s the lesson they’re trying to give us. Slow down. Be present. Lead with kindness. And understand that the deepest relationships aren’t built by forcing the moment… they’re built by earning trust, one patient step at a time.

Get rid of the ego.

This has been a huge theme this month with my clients. How much do we actually listen to our dogs and understand what they like and don’t like?

The best gift a dog can receive from us is feeling safe and understood 🤍 that makes you a good leader…. Not dominance.

If you want your dog to coexist in a world that wasn’t made for them… you need to learn from a distance.

Dogs naturally want to make space when they are unsure. Give them the grace they deserve especially when you have a new dog on your hands.

Ask yourself, have I ever let them experience things in an environment where they will succeed 🐾🐶

There was a time when my days were filled with conference calls, airports, hotel rooms, and meetings that probably could’ve been an email. I spent years building a career that looked good on paper, but something always felt like it was missing.

One day I stopped asking, “Why would this work?” and started asking, “Why not me?”

So I took the risk. I bet on myself. I walked away from comfort and certainty to chase something that had always been in my heart.

Now the days are longer, the work is harder, and there are no guarantees. But at the end of every day, I get to go home with a full heart because I know I made a difference. I get to help people better understand the dogs they love. I get to build trust, create connection, and be part of stories that truly matter.

I traded boardrooms for muddy boots, spreadsheets for leashes, and deadlines for moments that change lives. And I wouldn’t trade it back for anything.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a chance on yourself. You might just find the life you were always meant to live.

We spend so much time asking our dogs to understand our world that we rarely stop to wonder what their world feels like.

Maybe the dog who hangs back isn’t stubborn. Maybe the dog who needs a little more space isn’t difficult. Maybe they’re just doing what we all do when something feels uncertain—they’re trying to decide if they’re safe.

The more I work with dogs, the less I believe trust is something we train. It’s something we build. Quietly. Patiently. One choice at a time.

Maybe if we slowed down and listened a little more, we’d realize they were trying to teach us all along. ❤️🐾
