Thank you to the Middletown Arts Center for inviting us to their Gather in the Garden event yesterday to give a talk about the food and things you can do to attract birds to your yard. And thanks to the folks that came!

As well as many beautiful pieces of art displayed and for sale, the event had other classes and hands on crafts. Very nicely organized event!

Before I did my talk I walked around the gallery. For this event they had a competition whereby floral arrangements were made based on other people's art. The floral arrangers all chose their own art pieces from which to draw inspiration. Take a look at the attached photos. I hope it's ok that I'm sharing them. I had never seen this as a competition before but it's a thing!

Seriously, slow down for a few minutes, take a breather and check out the attached pics. Zoom in and look at the inspiration paintings first and then really look and zoom in on the arrangement if necessary to see the details they got using flowers and natural materials. The forms and eyes on the pair of white birds (and their beaks), and Cyclops (!) lol. The sea waves and spray. Colors, lines and textures fabulous on them all.

Loved It. I'm inspired.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

🐛 Nesting season is one of the busiest times of year for backyard birds... and a handful of mealworms can make a big difference! 🪺🐦

When birds are incubating eggs and raising hungry nestlings, every minute counts. Offering mealworms helps parent birds find food quickly so they can spend less time away from the nest and more time keeping eggs and babies safe and fed.

Live mealworms are especially valuable because they're packed with protein and moisture, making them an ideal food for growing baby birds. They're a favorite of bluebirds, wrens, warblers, woodpeckers, cardinals, chickadees, tanagers, jays, titmice and many more! ❤️

While adult birds happily devour dried mealworms, we recommend offering a mix of live and dried mealworms to give your backyard birds the best of both worlds.

Stop by soon and discover all the fun ways you can add mealworms to your backyard bird feeding menu. 🏡🐤🐣

Do you offer your birds suet or Bark Butter in the summer? ☀️ These foods aren't just for winter! They are a fantastic way to support nesting birds. The high protein and fat provide quick, essential energy for exhausted parents and soft, nutrient-dense nutrition for rapidly growing nestlings. 🪺🐦

This lovely gal has spotted a Trumpet Creeper vine and is holding on tight ☺️ to gather the nectar goodness! These flowers provide up to 10 times more nectar than many others, making them especially attractive to hummingbirds!🧡

It's springtime, so you know what that means... BABY BIRDS! 🥰

If you find a baby bird that is alone... the key is to determine if it's a nestling or a fledgling before intervening.

✔️ Fledgling (American Robin pictured): Fully feathered, alert, and hopping around? Leave it alone! These young birds are learning to fly and are still under their parents’ care. Watch from a distance, and you'll likely see an adult nearby.

✔️ Nestling: Partially feathered or bare-skinned and unable to move well? Look for a nearby nest. If you find it, gently place the bird back and observe from a distance.

❗ If you find an injured, truly orphaned bird, or can't locate the nest, contact a wildlife rehabilitator or ask us for our local facility contact. Also, remember that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it illegal to handle most wild birds without a permit in North America.

What you left alone this month — and what moved in instead.

You left the milkweed standing by the fence. Monarch caterpillars stripped it and pupated.

You didn't trim the hedge in June. A pair of cardinals raised a brood deep inside it.

You left the violets in the lawn. Fritillary caterpillars fed on the leaves nobody mowed.

You left the brush pile in the back corner. A Carolina wren claimed it for cover.

You didn't cut last year's dried stems. Small native bees tunneled in and nested.

You left the fallen log where it dropped. A red-backed salamander moved in underneath.

🌿 The hedge you didn't trim. The stems you didn't cut. The log you left lying. Every one of them became habitat the moment you walked away.

Take a look at this stunning leucistic Ruby-throated Hummingbird, spotted in Tennessee! 😮

Unlike albino birds, which lack all pigment and have pink or red eyes, leucistic birds carry a genetic condition that reduces feather pigment. That’s why this little hummer is nearly all white yet still has dark eyes and a normally colored bill.
Sightings like this are extremely rare! Have you ever spotted a leucistic bird in your backyard?!🕊️✨

Warm weather is here… and fresh bird food matters more than ever! ☀️🐦

Heat and humidity can spoil seed faster than you think, so keeping bird food fresh helps keep your backyard birds healthy and happy. Here are a 6 tips for smart summer seed storage:

🌻 Store seed in a cool, dry place outside your home
🛑 Use critter, rodent and insect-proof containers
🔄 Never mix old seed with fresh seed
📅 In warm weather, only store about 2 weeks worth of seed
🥄 Fill feeders with just a 1–2 day supply so seed stays fresh
🚫 Toss any moldy, rancid, or foul-smelling seed immediately

Fresh seed = healthier birds and more backyard visitors! 💛
