PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services urges all pet owners and animal caretakers to take precautions to protect animals from accidental or intentional poisoning.
In recent weeks, at least three pet owners in Hernando County have reported the unexplained death of their family pets.
Many common household products, foods, medications, pesticides, rodenticides, and lawn chemicals can be harmful or fatal to pets and wildlife. To help keep animals safe:
• Store all chemicals, medications, and toxic substances securely and out of reach of animals.
• Follow label instructions when using pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
• Never leave food scraps, medications, or unknown substances where animals can access them.
• Be aware that foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol-containing products, onions, and certain nuts can be toxic to pets.
• Supervise pets while outdoors and promptly remove any suspicious materials from your property.
• Report any suspected animal poisoning incidents to local law enforcement or Animal Services immediately.
If you believe an animal has been poisoned, seek veterinary care without delay. Quick action can save a life.
Additionally, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may be required.
Together, we can help ensure the safety and well-being of pets, livestock, and wildlife throughout our community.
