After thoroughly enjoying eviscerating a Lambchop toy (her people call it her "lambie"), Lucy moved on to playing with a fuzz-less tennis ball. She's having a blast!

When I asked Lulu where she wanted to go for her walk she rushed over to the back door of my car. ๐Ÿ˜†

I guess I should have specified, "Where do you want to go *in your neighborhood *?"!

Lucy's so cool that she gets dinner in bed. She actually prefers to lie down to eat her kibble!

Did you know that I also do nail trims for my client dogs?

I have my own clippers and dremel for it, but sometimes I use my clients' tools. Regardless of whose tools I use, I always bring yummy treats.

I use minimal force and cooperative care methods, which means that I train dogs to accept having husbandry chores like ear cleaning and nail grinding done to them.

Today's subject is Shiloh, a Pyrenees mix who is VERY sensitive about his feet. I'm currently in the process of getting him accustomed to my touch beyond his elbows and knees. We had a successful session of gradual touch where he got a yummy treat every time I marked with a "Yes!". I was eventually able to lightly touch one of his paw pads today.

Thank you very much for your trust, Shiloh. I promise to not betray it.

Chip the Havanese was suspicious of lots of things, especially wheeled objects like trash bins and strollers. In this video, I'm showing him that I am safe touching the bin and that he'll be safe too if he wants to get closer to it.

I reward him any time he get close or sniffs at it. Bravery should always be rewarded!

However, if Chip had shown signs he was still afraid or uncomfortable (tail tucking, lip licking or looking away), he would be able to leave.

In my experience, when I'm on a "boring" route, it's really easy to zone out, to stop paying attention to my surroundings. This is a risky habit to fall into when you're walking a dog. You can be surprised by pretty much anything and then fail to react appropriately to keep yourself and your dog safe and emotionally sound.

When I first started walking dogs as a way of making money during college, I noticed that this kept happening to me. I wanted to change that. To keep myself aware of my environment and entertained without music or podcasts, I started learning to identify the plants I saw every day. I bought field guides and took photos of plants I didn't know. My phone gallery had almost as many plant photos as there were dog photos!

Eventually it became a little game to play: identify as many plants as possible within an hour long walk. What made this easier was finding out about the iNaturalist app, a crowdsourcing plant, fungi, and creature identification app that helps biology researchers acquire real-world data about their specific species. (It's like playing a Pokรฉmon game in real life, only you can't battle another person with your picture of a prickly pear.)

Just in case you think I might be an expert at identifying plants by now, I'm still using iNaturalist to learn about plants, insects, and fungi I see while picking up poo.

Anyway, here's a picture of a Carolina geranium (also called cranesbill by folks around here), a wild species native to the southeastern US. It's a food source for solitary native bees, moths and butterflies, as well as a favorite winter forage for white-tailed deer.

It's a small plant with tiny flowers and seedheads and it's easy to overlook. However, it's a beautiful plant in the patchwork of natural areas still left in Williamson County.

I hope you find something interesting on your next walk with your dog!

Chip the Havanese was one of my first weekly walking clients. It was my privilege to help teach him the fundamentals of leash walking in his puppyhood.

A damp Havanese puppy is hilarious to me watch, especially when they have the Zoomies!

If you need a helping hand during the day for your growing puppy, hiring a professional dog caretaker (me!) can keep your puppy on the right path.

When I was shopping for another car, I wanted 3 things: it had to have a hatchback, have a great MPG, and I had to be able to fit (at least) a large Labrador and a Great Dane in the back seat for when Abby and Lulu need a ride. ๐Ÿ˜

For some reason, Blue isn't big on drinking water. Even after a 30 minute walk in 83ยฐF sunny weather, he didn't feel thirsty.

His people give him fruit as treats and feed him wet food to make sure he gets as much fluids as possible.

I felt really awful at the prospect of putting Blue up without him drinking any water, so I dropped some blueberries into his water bowl to see if he'd go after them.

It turns out that Blue really likes bobbing for blueberries! Hydration and enrichment all in one!
