Stop!!! This is your annual reminder that rabbits are not Easter present!! Rabbits are an 8 to 10 year commitment, they require lots of room to exercise and explore, enrichment and healthy diets. Our rabbits at PWF are the most expensive and labor intensive animals that we care for. Providing a balanced diet, clean environment, medical care and socialization to keep them happy and healthy requires a significant investment. Not to mention, they are incredibly sensitive and require a watchful eye to intervene to prevent serious medical issues. And even when you are watching and you do respond quickly, some issues still may escalate.
That was our experience with Alexis this month. Several weeks ago, we noticed her eye was showing signs of infection and began treatment immediately. After two weeks of treatment, the vet discovered she had actually scratched her eye and needed more intense treatment in order to try to save the eye. After a week and a half of laser treatments, and an intense medication regime, we return to the vet where we decided that the eye was unable to be saved. Alexis had emergency surgery on Tuesday and since she has returned home, we've been intently watching her due to concerns that she may be experiencing gastritis. We are now starting to feel confident that she is on the mend, but this is all to say.....rabbits are cute and adorable beings, but they are a LOT of work.
This year, consider making a donation to a local animal shelter, rather than purchasing bunnies or chicks or ducks to go in your easter basket. Maybe to an organization with one adorable one-eyed rabbit with a $2000 medical bill?
Any help.would be greatly appreciated ❤️🐇
