Sammy came and went. He was here for a week for a quick tune up and to practice finding a slower walk for mom and paying more attention to the rider. Here he is the day before leaving and giving a lesson to mom.

Day 6 with Loki:

Loki’s second time ever having tack on, and first time ever having a human on. These are his first steps!

I jumped up, jumped down, jumped back up and wiggled, jumped down, jumped back up and asked him to step off.

Day 5 with Loki:

Loki’s owner (a farrier) came out to do his feet now that’s he’s ready.
It was Loki’s first ever sober trim (he’s been sedated in the past), and his first time ever having shoes! He was asked to stand for nearly two hours, and scored an A+ from a content farrier and thrilled owner. The first nail went in, and it was like he didn’t even notice.

So proud of a handsome new man in his brand new tap shoes.

Before and after never looked better!

Day 4 with Loki:

We had a picnic breakfast together, did some physical therapy post Osteo visit, worked some more with feet, fly spray, and baths, and practiced sucking it up when you don’t like something.
We also did our first tacking and did walk and trot for the first time ever with clothes on, and nailed it! He never even hinted at a buck or rush. He just picked up the trot like it was his 1000th day on the job.

Loki, 14, lived in a field for 14 years. His owners (incredibly kind people, an equestrian and a farrier) bred him but life changed and they got busy. He was turned out on a pasture when he was young and completely unhandled after that with the exception of one move where he was winched into a trailer.
His owner spent several weeks working to get close enough to halter him (and did a wonderful job!) and then gave us a call to pick him up. We worked a tiny bit with the dressage whip to teach forward and backward cues, and then took him to the trailer door. In 45 minutes we had him loaded by his own volition on a loose lead line. David spent several days haltering him at meals, and then I got to jump in and join the fun.

Day one:
Leading to the arena was a mess (as expected since he didn’t know how to lead) but once we got there he was a gem. We spent a few minutes learning turns in the round pen and the got to work getting the tangles out of his main and desensitizing him. We spent about three hours with him and ended here (keeping in mind this horse was considered feral by his owners):

Hi everyone! Sorry it’s been a while. Sweet Basil has gone home and been replaced by her brother Sammy (for a quick tune up), and a boy named Loki (for a full start under saddle after living in a field for 14 years with little human contact).

Here’s Loki on his first day with us after pick up (5/12/21).

Just Sweet Basil being the cutest thing alive on one of her last rides before graduation.
