Black fly season is here 🪰🐾
If your pet seems extra uncomfortable after being outside, black flies could be the culprit. The most obvious sign of these small insects pestering your companion are small, bright red, bullseye-like, or bruised spots on areas with thin hair, such as the belly, inner thighs, and ears.
While they can be itchy or mildly painful, in most instances they are harmless and will resolve on their own within a few days. If your pet seems bothered, we recommend keeping the area clean and stopping your dog from scratching to avoid infections. Cold compresses can also be used to ease any discomfort. In very rare cases, allergic reactions may occur.
A few ways to help protect your pets:
• Avoid walks near standing water at dawn and dusk
• Keep pets indoors during peak swarm times
• Ask us about safe repellents and prevention options
