Brrr! With snow likely over the next couple days, its important to think about the best ways to keep our furry friends safe:
While "dog safe" de-icer is available, ingestion of any product can potentially be toxic, so make sure to rinse or brush off your pets feet once they are safely back inside!
While dogs and cats do a great job keeping themselves temperature regulated, sweater and weather proof jackets can be a great asset, especially for our thin haired friends, like greyhounds.
Remember that every pet deserves to be warm, so make sure to limit exposure to the elements and never let your pet outside while wet below 32°, as they can lose their temperature quickly.

We always love to see happy, healthy pets, and we know you love to keep them that way!

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭!

One of the most fascinating things about our patients is always going to be the predicaments they get themselves into. This time, it’s a Pacman frog named 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐥, who is so well loved he gets hand-fed every day.

Unfortunately, one day his voracious appetite led to him swallowing a piece of tubing along with his worms! After trying medicine to help the tubing pass on its own (it didn’t), we moved on to surgery. As you can see in the photo, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐠 is using surgical loupes that magnify the area to make sure every delicate suture is perfectly placed.

Frogs are unique in that they absorb many things directly through their skin (including medications, but also oils and toxins from human hands), so all handling was done with gloves, and Nigel was kept covered with wet, sterile towels throughout his procedure.

We’re happy to share that 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲. After two weeks of healing (and an updated feeding strategy), he’s back to being his bright, hungry self!

Did you know that a box of brownie mix contains a minimum of 10% cocoa powder? That's too much for this little counter surfer, Dahlia, who only weighs 15lbs! She came in for an emergency visit and vomited most of it back up within 45 minutes of eating and has made a full recovery!

Did a veterinary clinic once tell you that it’s safe to give hydrogen peroxide to make a dog vomit? While in some emergency situations that may be the only option, recent evidence has shown that it can cause significant harm to the esophagus and increases risk of aspiration pneumonia. We recommend calling your local veterinarian for assistance. And remember, Hunter Veterinary Clinic is always here to love on your pet whether they need routine, urgent, or emergency care!

Have you seen a new LVT around? Odessa has been licensed for 2 years, and came to us this summer; raptors and exotics are all new to her here at HVC, and she's enjoying them so far!
In her spare time she hangs out with her boyfriend and (recently toothless) cat Atticus, and watching documentaries.
We have enjoyed getting to know Odessa better, and appreciate her hard work and dedication to expanding her knowledge.

Interesting case!
While this lovely girl was out on a run, a fence jumped up and got her, oh no!
Amazingly, only her front Right Canine tooth was affected, and with a quick local block (just like humans get!), an X-Ray, and a Veterinarian, the tooth was removed safely and efficiently!
We are always impressed by the sheer size of a dog canine tooth, which has a root almost 60% longer then the crown (see the Left Canine comparison photo!). In Pretzels case, being a 61 lbs mixed breed, her tooth came to an incredible 1.5" long!
No doubt Pretzel feels much better now, and will keep a sharp eye out for any fences in her future! We love our patients!

Congratulations to Maddy, our newest Licensed Veterinary Technician!

What is an LVT? Technicians are specially trained to perform many duties in the clinic, including (but not limited to!) monitoring anesthesia, performing cytologies and X-Rays, collecting blood, filling prescriptions, performing emergency procedures, attending to hospitalized patients, and, perhaps most importantly, being an advocate for animals through client communication.
