After a rejuvenating maternity leave, Wild Child is back and ready to serve the public again this spring!

I’ve been truly blessed. My daughter Mallory was born this November, and for her sake, things are going to look a little different around here for a while. In summary: I’ll be returning to work here in April once the weather warms up, with my focus shifting more towards lessons and sessions.

I won’t be returning to full time training for the foreseeable future. I have a reputation for taking in and taking on some exceptionally wild and tough ones in the past, but I’m gonna steer clear of the wild/crazy/dangerous for a while. That being said, I know of some amazing people in the area I can recommend for those extra tough cases.

Hope everyone is enjoying their horses, and staying safe and warm out there!

Let’s talk treats.

This is Chester, one of the horses I grew up with. I taught him to smile to a cue, and would reward with a treat. Cute, right!?!

Treats are great if used correctly. But I caution those that over-use, or unknowingly misuse.

Let’s give an example and walk through a situation where a horse impolitely wants, and gets, a treat.

Horse: invades owners personal bubble and nudges owner for treat.
Owner: reaches into pocket and grabs a couple.
Horse: impatiently pushes owner for treat.
Owner: thinking it’s cute, steps back to get to a more comfortable distance and gives horse treat.

What behavior did the owner just reinforce? The horse essentially just pushed its owner off the hay pile and took his/her food.

So this horse probably tests/fights/walks all over the owner when being led, ridden, etc. The owner probably gets frustrated because they don’t feel they have control. The horse probably gets frustrated and wants to be the boss because the horse believes he/she is.

Can it all be because of a treat? There’s most likely other additional factors, but I’ve definitely witnessed treats contribute to the uncomfortable ā€œwho is actually the bossā€ grey area a horse and owner may find themselves in.

As long as treats follow a positive behavior or are earned, they aren’t bad. Just be aware of what you could be rewarding! You want a ā€œChesterā€ who fills your days with excess smiles and happy endorphins, not a pushy 1000lb butthead.

āŒUPDATE: THEY FOUND HIMāŒ

HORSE PEOPLE we need your help! Abbie Meksch’s mustang Waylon is missing, lost at Rustlers Gulch! Red dot is where they parked, blue dot is where they lost him. He ran the other way from the trailer. If anyone is willing to haul out and help, she does not want to go home without him!

He is a bay BLM mustang with barrel crates saddle, and black CSI saddle pad.

Since life had other plans for my barrel dreams this summer (🤰) I thought, why not let 2 of my oldest lesson kids have some fun on E-man this summer! 🤠

These two girls have been flawlessly and correctly running the pattern on E-man for quite some time now in our lessons. Everest was still pretty green on the pattern when I stopped riding, and he still has a lot to learn, but these girls quite literally took the reins and have put in the hours with him. As long as they tell him where to go, he goes! We had our first ā€œpracticeā€ race last weekend, and got to experience how nerves and barrels go together. I told them to just do their best, fast is last, and I couldn’t be more proud of how these girls did under pressure! Running the pattern with just you and your horse is one thing, but it’s definitely different with a bunch of people watching. Now that we got that first one out of the way, we are getting ready to add some speed for the next one in August!

This little c**t was born here at the barn back in April, 2022. Stetson is out of a once-untouched feedlot rescue (some might remember Astrid, who I had in training). He is now owned, loved, and adored by arguably my favorite lesson client family. While these girls have been taking lessons, they have experienced some of Everest’s buttons and tricks. They thought it would be neat for Stetson to learn the lay-down.

A horse has to get over the natural prey animal thought that ā€œthey could eat me if I go down and become vulnerableā€ in order to do this. Obviously, with all the love his girls give him, Stetson doesn’t fear for his life at all. I don’t think he’s ever feared for his life šŸ˜‚. Humans didn’t do him the disservice of never touching him, or physically/mentally neglecting him before good people stepped in. It fills my heart to see the generational ā€œtraumaā€ (if you will) that his rescued dam and sire had to overcome in order to coexist with people… stop with him. He’s going to grow up to be the coolest horse for his family.

Here’s a sweet gaited gelding looking for a new pasture. Here’s what his owner has to say about him. Come try him out at the barn, we have trails on site!

ā€œThis is Louie, he's 19, gaited gelding. He is Missouri Fox trotter/thb. Due to financial difficulty I have to thin my heard. I've had him for about 5 years, and in that time we've done posse, playdates, obstacle courses, trails, pony rides, cows, gone through drive throughs. He's not afraid of bikes, dogs, cars, tractors, wildlife. He crosses bridges, jumps (tho I haven't jumped over 2 ft) very friendly with everyone. The kind to meet you at the gate. He loves his rides, he's just as eager going out as he is coming back in. Stands very nice for a Ferrier.

His only vice in my opinion could be his speed. He's very speedy. Sometimes it can be difficult to hold him back. In arenas, he's pretty easy going, on trails that's where he likes most of his speed. A confident beginner could ride him. He's my go to, but ready for his next adventure.ā€

This is a sweet guy who loves his job, and can cover some ground. I think he could make a great trail partner for someone who wants to get some mileage or do endurance of some kind.

What a weekend, what an opportunity, and what a mustang!! We got back from the Idaho Horse Expo last night. I’m so proud of this mare, considering she sat all winter and I dusted her off only two weeks before the expo. Unfortunately I didn’t make any headway in convincing her owner to sell her to me (Kim Kellogg šŸ˜‚šŸ¤). But, Kim does have 5 kiger foals hitting the ground this spring/summer if anyone is interested in a beautiful baby Kiger!

Another Colville stang haltered! This mare came in with a snotty nose and was very underweight. We are one step closer to giving her a much-needed deworming and perhaps a vet check. She wasn’t in holding long before I picked her up so chances are she came in like this from the wild. She’s packing on the pounds now. I can’t wait to see her shed out! I’m also very ready for the weather to act like spring. It was snowing today šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ‘Ž
