Happy World Turtle Day!

Today is a great day to learn more about turtles.

Turtles’ shells are fused to their skeletons and form an essential part of their bodies. Their lungs sit just beneath the top of the shell, so when a turtle is flipped onto its back for too long, the weight of its internal organs can press against the lungs and cause suffocation and severe stress.

The name “turtle” refers to all members of the order Testudines. This order is split into two suborders:

-Pleurodira (side-necked turtles): about 96 species
-Cryptodira (hidden-necked turtles): about 260 species
Within Cryptodira you’ll find the greatest diversity, including roughly 40–50 species of tortoises, 25–30 softshell turtles, 4 snapping turtles, and 6–8 sea turtles, among many other groups.

Turtles that live different lifestyles are often grouped as:

-Tortoises: land-dwelling only
-Terrapins: primarily freshwater, with some time on land
-Sea turtles: almost entirely marine, rarely coming ashore

Just as all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares, all tortoises and terrapins are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises or terrapins.

A very tragic thing has happened to some great people and we wish we could help more. We are so glad to see all of these people helping these animals and the owners of Spock's Sanctuary. Though tragic it is always amazing to see how amazing people can be when working towards a common goal.
