Western Hills Humane Society is a no-kill, non-suffering pet shelter that protects, saves, and enhances the lives of abused, neglected, forgotten, and lost animals. Located in Spearfish, South Dakota. In addition to donations and fundraising efforts, the shelter is generously funded by the City of Spearfish, Lawrence County, and various grants and donations.

⚡️Update - Flash was surrendered to us and is now available for adoption. We will get him on the website on/before Monday but here is what we know:
Male, neutered, born 4.18.24, Terrier/Retriever Mix, good with other dogs and kids (just excitable/high energy), likes to destroy stuffed toys, slight separation anxiety, does know basic commands, and is up-to-date on everything except his rabies shot which is scheduled for Wed. He is a sweet boy who will make a wonderful companion!

Male dog picked up on St. Joe last night (5.4.26) at 8:30pm. Appears young, is very friendly! If this is your dog, please contact Animal Control through dispatch at 605.642.1300. Impound fee + city pet tag due.

👎Sawdust or pine litters don't last very long with how much he pees and have pieces too big to filter through litter scoops...
👎Non clumping litters don't absorb enough urine and keep his paws dry...
🔥But tofu litter is amazing! It keeps him smelling fresh, clumps but doesn't stick to his paws, and is easily scoopable!
🎁If you're looking to treat an old man to some tofu cat litter, Crunchy would be thankful! And he would love to show off how nice his fur is after a shave a couple months back. He's feeling good and won't say "no" to a Churu - we have some on hand we'd love for you to share with him.
🧡Crunchy IS available for adoption! His Prednisone is affordable and easy to give daily, he's lovable and easy-going... he just needs to be the only cat. He doesn't like to be picked up or have his paws touched, but he loves pets anywhere else. He is a little crunchy and a lotta cute!

And our newest resident is Lil Outlaw! He was dumped in Whitewood, has lots to say, and is ready for adventures. We are open today (Tuesday) until 4:30pm, closed tomorrow, and reopen 10:30am to 4:30pm if you want to meet him and more kitty friends. Read more about our adoptable pets on our website.

Peyton is always waiting for an adventure! Okay, let's be real, it's usually a food adventure... 🤣
Peyton is a big boy (85 lbs) that jumps like a bunny in excitement, is extremely food motivated, current on vaccinations and is neutered, can be naughty sometimes with nips (but once he knows you, the only thing you have to be afraid of is some excitement slobber if you're too close while he does his bunny hops - you have been warned😘), but is a very sweet guy ready to live out the rest of his life somewhere other than a kennel. He's 7, so he is technically a senior but he's not slowing down!
🐾 Come meet this handsome boy today from 10:30-4:30 and give him a treat! He will probably take a couple introductions before he quits his tough guy huffin' and puffin' he tends to do and treats are his favorite bribe.
Shout out to our rockstar volunteer, Kyla, who brushed all those tufts out after this vet appt. He's looking and feeling good without all that extra winter fur. 🖤

🖤 Prego was an awesome mom to her four sauce kittens - Bertolli, Rao, Ragu, and Ortega. She also took on three orphaned babies after her kittens stopped nursing - Snack Attack, Munchie, and Chow. She was one cool mom that never stressed, kept her babies clean and happy, and was always excited for the shelter humans to come give her (and her babies) love. 😻
Prego is playful but still loves to lounge, a huge fan of head-to-tail pets, and has an adorable bobtail (sorry there's no photo). We guess her around 5 years old, she has some scars on her ears from years of street living, and her coat is growing back nicely after getting shaved due to matting in the midst of birthing and nursing her kittens. She let us give her a cut while her babies nursed - we were in awe! 🙀😺
Prego does not like dogs. She doesn't seem to mind her neighboring cattery cats. However, we aren't sure how she'd share a space with other cats at home but most cats adjust fine after some time so we are optimistic!
If our Director could have a 4th cat, Prego would be it. Since she can't, someone awesome better scoop her up! 😽

💥Gus & Scooter updates:

🦷Gus's tooth extraction was a success! Look at that sucker - ouch.
He is recovering well. His surgery only cost $527.13!

🛵Scooter had an eye hemorrhage due to Glaucoma on Thursday morning. We decided to remove it for overall health and he's recovering well. His surgery was $557.34.

When we did fundraising for Gus, this community really showed up! We raised $1,555. Thank you so much to all you animal lovers for donating. ❤️❤️ So after both these surgeries, we still have funds of $470.30 to go toward a future medical/surgical needs. ❤️ Thank you to Animal Care Center of Spearfish and Spearfish Veterinary Clinic for taking care of these pups. ❤️

Both Scooter and Gus are still looking for their forever homes! Come meet them today before we close at 4:30.
