AS/AP Cat (Associated Society/Animal Protection)Shelter is a private organization located in Sparta, WI. Visits by appointment. Our Mission. Adopting a Friend.

Staffed by volunteers so there is not always someone present. Beginning in 1992 as a non-profit animal rescue group, A.S./A.P. (Associated Society/Animal Protection) evolved into a no-kill, limited capacity cat shelter by 2001. Since it's inception, the independent organization has functioned solely on private donations, fundraisers, and volunteers. There is no financial support from the county, state, or any other group. Our mission is to take in stray cats and kittens as space allows and find permanent, loving homes for them after they're examined by a veterinarian, FIV/Leuk tested, wormed, vaccinated, flea-treated, spayed/neutered plus treated for whatever medical conditions they arrive with-anything from respiratory infections to broken bones and gunshots wounds. We have an outreach program where we can offer some help to people with their own cats (or cats they find) depending upon our available resources. The cats housed at A.S./A.P. get a clean, warm environment with nutritious food, lots of compassionate care, and plenty of time to run, frolic, and interact with other cats and people. There is a wide variety of personalities and surely one that is just right for you. Potential adopters complete an application and are screened for the ability to provide permanent, quality care for a cat. Our staff try to match the adopter with the appropriate cat for their home, and follow-up support is available after the adoption.

🐾 Meet Our Shy Sweethearts: Austin, Kasson, Sis & Jazz 💕

Over the next few days, we’re highlighting some of the different types of cats waiting for homes at AS/AP Cat Shelter. We’re starting with four very special cats who can sometimes be the easiest to overlook — our shy sweethearts. ❤️

These are most likely not the cats who will come running up to you when you first walk in. They may hide, act skittish, or quietly watch you from a distance. Occasionally they surprise us and greet someone new, but that isn’t always the case.

But we know who they become once they trust you. ❤️

🐱 Jazz & Sis love attention, sitting on their favorite volunteers’ laps, soaking up pets, and even greeting their favorite people at the door. ❤️

🐱 Austin & Kasson can be found twirling around their favorite people’s legs and doing belly flops asking for pets. Austin and Kasson are siblings, and we would love to see them adopted together. Ask us about our special adoption fee for adopting siblings!

That side of them may not come out during your first visit — but it’s there. ❤️

All four have been with us for years, and we would love nothing more than for them to finally experience the comfort of a home and a person of their own.

They need patient, cat-savvy adopters who understand that trust cannot be rushed. They’ll need a safe place to decompress, the freedom to hide when they need to, and someone willing to let them set the pace. It could take weeks or even months — and that’s okay.

Because the cat who hides from you today may someday be waiting for you at the door. The cat watching you from across the room may someday be curled up in your lap. And the cat who was once too nervous to approach may someday be twirling around your legs asking for one more pet. ❤️

That’s the beautiful thing about earning the trust of a shy cat.

🎉 Congratulations, Destiny! 🎉

We are beyond thrilled to announce that sweet Destiny has found her forever home! ❤️

Destiny has always been a people-loving girl. She did wonderfully with her foster mom and loved spending time with our volunteers, but shelter life and being around other cats was stressful for her. We knew she would be happiest as someone’s one and only.

And now she has a family of her very own! 🏡❤️ We’re already hearing that she adjusted quickly and her new family is enjoying her. She even has a new name for her new chapter — Suzi! 🥹💕

To her new family, thank you for choosing her and giving this sweet girl the home we hoped she would find.

Congratulations, Destiny — now Suzi! Happy forever! 🐾❤️

💚 Clover Update 💚

It’s hard to believe it’s been a month since we lost our sweet Emmett. While the loss still feels incredibly raw, the shelter has slowly settled into a new routine without our big boy with us. 🤍

We know many of you have been wondering how Clover is adjusting, and we first want to thank everyone for the love you have shown. From the donations made in Emmett’s honor, to the cards we’ve received for Clover, the treats dropped off for her, and all the inquiries about how she is doing—it truly warms our hearts to know how deeply these two are loved. 💚

Those who know Clover know she has always been our sweet, shy girl with her particular people she trusts. Lately, though, we’ve been seeing a little more of her affectionate side. She is allowing us to brush her, giving us lots of purrs, and leaning in for pets. In true Clover fashion, one minute she is soaking up all the attention and the next she decides she would rather stick to herself. We wouldn’t want her any other way! ❤️

We can’t say exactly how Clover is feeling, and we don’t doubt that she misses her sweet friend, but she appears to be adjusting well. She is eating, sleeping in the bed she shared with Emmett, going out on the catio, looking out the window, and laying in the middle of the room watching and taking everything in. She also continues to sit by the door like she and Emmett used to do together. 💚

After Emmett passed, we got Clover a special cat cuddle companion stuffed animal for their cage. Whether Clover noticed or appreciated our efforts...well, she hasn’t exactly told us. 😂 But it gave us a little comfort knowing she had something soft beside her and wasn’t completely alone.

We honestly believe Clover sensed that something was changing with her sweetheart Emmett in the weeks leading up to his passing. We can’t know for certain, but we wonder if somehow that helped prepare her for the tremendous change that was coming and perhaps played a small part in how well she has adjusted.

Most importantly, we aren’t seeing Clover regress. She is still our observant, particular, sweet and wonderfully shy girl. We are so happy with how she is doing and will continue following her lead and giving her all the love and reassurance she needs.

Thank you for continuing to love our girl and for keeping her sweetheart Emmett in your hearts right alongside us. 🐾💚

💜 Meet Destiny 💜

Destiny is just under a year old, and when it comes to people, this girl is an absolute sweetheart. She loves attention, affection, and simply being close to her person.

While in foster care, Destiny absolutely adored her foster mom. She followed her everywhere, happily curled up with her at night, and quickly became her little shadow. She's also playful and curious. She loves watching the birds and has been enjoying spending time on the shelter catio taking in everything around her. 💕

Destiny's one request? She would really like to be your one and only cat. Being around other cats is stressful for her, and the shelter environment can be difficult because of that. We would love to see Destiny back in a home where she can relax, feel comfortable, and have a person of her very own again.

If you're looking for a sweet, playful and affectionate companion who will follow you around, curl up beside you at night, and happily be your little shadow, Destiny may be your girl!

🧡 Meet Hoover! 🧡

Hoover is a 4-month-old ginger boy with a whole lot of energy and an even bigger zest for life! 😹

This little guy’s adventure started before he even arrived at the shelter. Hoover hitched an unexpected ride underneath a vehicle all the way from Onalaska to Sparta—and somehow made it safely! We think that wild introduction to life may explain his fearless, ready-for-anything personality. 😂

Hoover is GO, GO, GO! He loves climbing, jumping, chasing toys, wrestling with his kitten friends, and exploring anything he can find. But underneath all that energy is one incredibly sweet little guy. When he finally slows down, Hoover is more than happy to climb into a lap and soak up some cuddles. 🥰

We would love to see Hoover adopted with one of the other kittens he has bonded with. If that isn’t possible, he would thrive in a home with another playful cat who can keep up with his energy and be his buddy.

🧡 Meet Davidson — or Davey to his friends! 🧡

This adorable 4-month-old ginger boy is an absolute sweetheart with the perfect mix of playful kitten energy and a gentle, lovable personality. In fact, Davey might just be the gentlest of our four kittens. 🥹🧡

Davey loves wrestling with his buddies, chasing toys, exploring his surroundings, and seeing what everyone is up to. He’s curious about everything, and with those big, beautiful eyes, you can almost see him taking it all in before happily joining the fun. 🥰

And just wait until this little guy decides it’s cuddle time. ❤️ Davey loves attention, and once he settles in for some love, he will absolutely melt your heart.

Sweet, curious, playful, cuddly, and ridiculously cute—Davey is pretty hard not to fall in love with. 🧡

Davey would do well with any one of our kittens or another playful cat already in the home. If possible, we would especially love to see him adopted with one of his kitten friends. All four of these babies have done so well together and have developed some pretty great bonds. 🐾❤️

Just a sweet Clover moment to brighten your day. 💚

Our girl has been soaking up a little extra love and attention lately. 🥹 And while you may not be able to hear it in the video, trust us—Clover was definitely purring and loving every minute of those pets! ❤️

She may always be our sweet, shy and particular Clover, but when she decides it’s time for attention, she makes sure to soak it all in. 🐾💚
