Hey everyone! Next Friday May 8th is the opening of The Sheep Detectives movie we will 100% be at the Jonesville (Elkin) cinema for the opening night. There might be more adventure to come but right now this is all we can 100% as of this moment today be sure of. We understand that this might be a little bit of a drive for our further away friends but without a good centralize location and the possibility of ….MORE…. this worked out best for everyone.
This is a movie based off the book “Three Bags Full” (translated from its original German) there will be high quality characters, twist and turns. The movie is rated as a family friendly movie.

The State Laboratory has notified us that a raccoon submitted for testing was infected with the rabies virus.

The raccoon was found on Echo Drive in a horse pasture. There is no evidence to believe the horses had physical contact with the raccoon. This is the first confirmed rabies case in the county this year.

Visit to https://nc-caldwellcounty.civicplus.com/197/Rabies to learn how to protect your pets from rabies.

Rabies can infect ANY MAMMAL!!! It is recommended to have any animals vaccinated for rabies. Large animals typically every year and small animals as is recommended per state regulations. If you don’t know if your animal can be vaccinated please ask. It is the law that a licensed veterinarian must give all rabies vaccines.

*****HUGE SHEEP/GOAT medication PSA****

MUST READ!

Hi everyone I have a EXTREMELY important announcement! Valbazen is currently not available on backorder with a date according to credible sources saying the manufacturer does NOT expect it to be back until sometime in 2027!!!!
In reality we have 5 effective dewormers (I don’t count the grain dewormer because it can’t be given to male small ruminants and is almost impossible to dose and get the animal to eat correctly). So if you have been using Valbazen as part of your combination when deworming is necessary (remember you should NEVER be deworming regularly or on a routine!!!!!). This is a discussion that WE me as your veterinarian and you need to have together to figure out what is going to be the best option. The small ruminant veterinary community, veterinary parasitologist and veterinary pharmacist are looking into what we can do to get through this hard patch, but we are limited. Remember there are NO new dewormers even in the distant 10 year future!
If you are a cattle producer that has Valbazen I would be willing to work something out with you to get you a legal, effective, safe and cost effective replacement! If you would be willing to do this please text me at 336-816-9208.
As of now there are many drugs we are having issues obtaining. Excede having been one that we’ve been dealing with a while, if you are in need of Excede and are a current client basically I have to get on an allocation list. So you need to let me know WELL in advance before you are out because it is sporadic when it comes available. Penicillin G is also back on the difficult to get list. Keep what you got! I am on the list for stock as it becomes available!
My goal is to keep y’all informed on the information I am given as I receive it.

Please share especially if you know a cattle producer that might be able to help me or yall help each other help other farmers get the meds they need!

Unfortunately our area is being hit by some hard weather. The storm at least in my general area ended up being probably the worst combination of everything. The ice is so thick that you can’t kick, punch, shovel enough to break it through to the ground there is just enough snow under the ice that if the ice does break through it’s enough to cause cuts to feet and hooves. Biggest issue is to make sure that your critters have LOTS of hay. Hay helps the rumen (the fermentation vat compartment of the stomach to work best) this helps heat the animals from the inside and what allows them to tolerate the severe cold. Water in warming buckets help. There is actually some good science that shows water around 70°ish is best and animals intake the water more readily because it does not cause a big drop in rumen temperature helping maintaining internal temperature. Heated water is not available to all but if you can it’s totally worth it. Making sure they have plenty of water available to the because with increased hay intake also requires increased water intake since normally when eating grass they get a good amount of water from the grass. As far as blanketing calves, goats, sheep, horses, etc i use the Auburn University Vet Schools flow chart to decided if it’s needed. Calf/other baby ear warmers are also something you can make vid bits and pieces or buy new. Make sure all animals have indoor locations to keep warm. Keep track of animals that are naturally “fluffy” by feeling their body under all that fluff to make sure they are not getting too thin. Checking FAMACHA scores on sheep, goats and camelids is also helpful to know those to watch and might need extra care.

With all the weather changes and kidding fast approaching/getting started I hope our goat friends feel seen. 😂

THIS IS MAJOR, BIG, HUGE NEWS!!! For those that own, breed, raise, pet and hunt rabbits!!! This disease has been a long time coming! This disease is extremely easily transmitted via just walking where a sick rabbit was you can spread this disease to other wild rabbits or your own domestic rabbits. There is a very effective vaccine. We are one of very very few veterinary practices in the area that carry the vaccine. The vaccine does require an initial booster just like most vaccines in other animals. Please let us know if you are interested in getting your rabbits vaccinated as we need to be very specific about our schedule due to the booster.

The first case of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus type 2 in North Carolina was confirmed in a domestic rabbit in Dare County. RHDV2 is typically a fatal disease affecting both domestic and wild rabbit populations and is primarily found in the Southwestern United States.

“We encourage rabbit owners that observe unexplained deaths in their domestic rabbits to contact their veterinarian or the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at 919-707-3250,” said Martin. “Domestic rabbit owners are also encouraged to follow proper quarantine protocols when introducing a new rabbit, as well as keeping domestic rabbits from any potential contact with wild rabbits.”
