Some things to think about for adding value to your calves at sale time. How you vaccinate your calves prior to the sale barn directly impacts that calf's ability to thrive and grow once he leaves your farm. 📸🐾 HELP US FILL OUR 2027 CALENDAR! 🐾📸

We’re inviting all of our wonderful clients and community members to share pictures of your small animal companions AND livestock for our upcoming 2027 Spalding Animal Clinic Calendar! 🐶🐱🐴🐮🐷🐔

But what do we do with all those pictures? 🤔

We sort through as many submissions as we can and create our very own clinic calendar for the upcoming year! 🗓️❤️

Once the calendars are ready, they’ll be available for purchase right here at the clinic, with the money raised going toward our Spay/Neuter Fund. ✂️🐾

This fund helps us care for the stray cat population in Spalding and surrounding communities by providing important vaccinations and spay/neuter services to help with population control. 🐱❤️

So whether you have a goofy pup, sassy cat, favorite horse, curious cow, backyard chickens, or any other animal you love — we’d love to see them! 🐾📸

Thank you to everyone who participates and helps us support the animals in our community! ❤️

📸 Send us your favorite animal photos via the comment section or email and help us make the 2027 calendar one to remember! 🐾🗓️

🦟🐴 WEST NILE VIRUS: DON’T LET ONE MOSQUITO BITE PUT YOUR HORSE AT RISK!

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening neurologic disease in horses. Signs can include fever, lethargy, weakness, stumbling, muscle tremors, head pressing/tilting, circling, and difficulty standing.

The good news? Vaccination is one of the best ways to protect your horse. 💉

Make sure your horse is current on their West Nile vaccination. Regular vaccination can greatly reduce the risk of severe disease if your horse is exposed.

🦟 Reduce standing water around your property
🐴 Keep horses current on recommended vaccines
🌙 Limit exposure during peak mosquito activity
🌿 Use appropriate mosquito control measures when possible

Prevention is always better than treatment! Talk with Spalding Animal Clinic about getting your horse protected. 💚

Once again we are recommending post exposure vaccination for a bat exposure over the weekend. Take precautions when handling wildlife.

After a possible exposure, immediately wash bites or scratches thoroughly with soap and water for about 15 minutes and contact a physician or public health department for a rabies risk assessment. Bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes are among the important wildlife risks in the United States; dogs remain a major risk in many other countries. Not every animal encounter requires treatment, which is why appropriate risk assessment matters.

Since July, several states have reported increases in human exposures to rabid or potentially rabid animals, along with increased use of rabies post exposure prophylaxis. The CDC is also seeing errors in how that treatment is administered. Rabies remains rare in humans in the United States, but once symptoms develop it is nearly always fatal. The important message is that it is preventable when a genuine exposure is recognized and treated correctly before symptoms begin.

In a previously unvaccinated person who requires PEP, treatment includes wound care, human rabies immune globulin infiltrated into and around the wound when feasible, and vaccine on days 0, 3, 7 and 14. HRIG and the first vaccine dose should never be given in the same syringe or anatomical site, and rabies vaccine should not be administered in the gluteal area. Immunocompromised patients require a five dose series and confirmation of an adequate antibody response.

The reason for taking this seriously is simple: before symptoms, rabies is preventable. After symptoms develop, it is almost invariably fatal.

Since July, several high-profile rabies outbreaks and mass rabies exposure events have occurred, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to highlight the importance of performing careful rabies risk assessments and following evidence-based recommendations for administering pos...
