In Tennessee you can tour the country’s largest underground lake, hidden deep below the mountains at the Lost Sea, where you ride a glass-bottom boat across a calm, dark lake surrounded by wide cave walls and ceiling rock. Your visit starts with a walk through a long tunnel and continues on a guided cave tour that leads downhill into the cavern system. Once you reach the lake, you step into a boat and glide across the water while large rainbow trout swim below you. Along the way, guides share the cave’s long history, including its use by Cherokee people and later by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The full tour lasts about one hour and fifteen minutes, and the cave stays near 58 degrees year-round, making it a comfortable place to visit in any season.
