⚠️ IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR DOG OWNERS ⚠️
At Chitawee French Bulldogs, the health and well-being of our dogs—and dogs everywhere—is always important to us. We want to share information from the AKC Canine Health Foundation about New World screwworm (NWS) and what dog owners should know.
New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on living tissue. Even a very small wound—such as a tick bite, scratch, or other tiny break in the skin—can provide an opportunity for the fly to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae can burrow into healthy tissue and cause a painful wound that may worsen rapidly without treatment.
🐾 What should dog owners do?
• Check your dog regularly, paying particular attention to wounds, sores, swelling, or areas that aren't healing normally.
• Watch for bloody or foul-smelling wounds or visible eggs or larvae around a wound.
• Clean and care for wounds promptly.
• Keep routine parasite prevention current, including protection against ticks that can create small breaks in the skin.
• If something doesn't look right, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Dogs that travel, are transported, recently rescued, or spend more time roaming outdoors may warrant additional vigilance. The good news is that for most pet dogs, the AKC Canine Health Foundation says the immediate risk remains relatively low. The message is awareness and vigilance—not panic.
