Surprise!! Yesterday I started a new job at Red River Animal Emergency Hospital and Referral Center in Fargo, ND. While I loved doing mobile ultrasounds and echocardiograms, the 20-mile non-compete hamstrung Beehive Vet right out of the gate. Fargo is only 90 min from Kim's folks' farm, too, so it's like we're being called home.

So, if you're in North Dakota or Minnesota, there's now a board-certified veterinary internist, as well as an board-certified oncologist and a residency-trained surgeon at your disposal!😀

I've been away from social media for a minute. This is Rosie, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who I diagnosed with Epilepsy. It's not too bad of a diagnosis, really. We're treating her with with Keppra to control her seizures.

Isn't she a cutie!

It is SPRING in Utah!! And with Spring comes this little devil, the parasite . While it is always around, as we venture outdoors more with our pets, perhaps frequenting our many and watering holes that allow dogs, we expose them (and ourselves) to this persistent parasite. Giardia is highly contagious and can survive in the environment for months.

While many dogs never show symptoms, and are particularly susceptible to giardia, as was reminded about a week ago.

Giardia infection can only be confirmed using a f***l test, usually under a microscope. Many facilities are now requiring a f***l test before they will accept your pet because of the prevalence and contagiousness of giardia in Utah, particularly our more heavily populated counties.

We typically treat infections with metronizadole, an antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent used in the treatment of certain anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections. It is important to see your veterinarian for a suspected giardia infection to rule out other causes of like other parasites or . After all, I'm 😉

Last week, 5 gorillas at the Dallas Zoo tested positive for COVID. The NVSL identified them all as Omicron. Thank goodness that none of them are having symptoms.

GORILLA UPDATE: Today, we've received confirmation from the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) that COVID-19 presumed positive test results on 5 of our western lowland gorillas were accurate. In addition, NVSL identified that they all have the Omicron variant. Since receiving the presumptive positive results last week, all gorillas have been tested every few days, and everyone is still symptom-free at this time. Our zoologists and veterinarians will continue to keep a close eye on both troops. Reminder — Dallas Zoo visitors do not pose a transmission threat to the gorillas, or vice versa, given the distance between the areas used by guests and the animals’ habitats.
