When your dog licks you, it may be gathering information through your scent while also engaging in familiar social behavior. Research from Queen’s University Belfast found that dogs can distinguish the smell of a person experiencing psychological stress from that same person’s relaxed scent, using changes present in breath and sweat. This suggests that dogs can pick up chemical cues linked to our emotional state, helping them interpret how we may be feeling.
