How fascinating is the dog’s nose?!

Every person has a distinct odour profile👃

It's as individual to our dogs as a finger print is to us.

It’s influenced by a combination of factors including genetics, skin microbiome, diet, health, hormones and habits.

Your odour profile is made up of:

💧 Skin secretions & sweat
A mixture of water, salts, proteins, lipids and other chemical compounds.

🌬️ Breath
Contains volatile compounds produced by the body and digestive system.

🚽 Urine & faeces
Contain many chemical compounds that contribute to an individual's overall odour profile.

💇 Hair & scalp oils
Sebum contains lipids and other compounds that can produce characteristic odours.

🦠 Bacteria
The microorganisms living on our skin break down substances in sweat and sebum, producing additional volatile compounds.

No scientific studies have been able to identify exactly what part of the odour profile they favour when trailing, but what we do know is that when a Mantrailing dog follows your scent, they're working with a complex chemical signature, not one single smell.

So when we talk about Scent ID being so important in Mantrailing, it's because every single person has their own unique combination!

ANY dog can participate!!

WHY THE MUZZLE you ask? Mantrailing is a sport open to any dog, and most muzzled dogs in other countries are done due to breed legislation, ingestion of foreign objects while trailing, behavioral support, etc. So while we currently don’t have any student dogs working in a muzzle, it is supported with the methods used and would give some dogs a rare opportunity to use their talents.
