Flint von Freising is a stunning 1–2 -year-old Belgian Tervuren-mix (best guess) with a spectacular long coat. He knows he is something special and all eyes will be focused on him with his exotic look. Always ready for adventure, Flint comes out enthusiastically for his walks and has shown great progress on leash—while his initial excitement can cause him to pull, he listens well to gentle corrections and settles into a nice heel, even walking nicely alongside a pack of 6 other dogs once settled. He knows his "sit" command and is very treat-motivated, making training a fun experience. In playgroups, he is truly the life of the party; he enters comfortably and thrives when paired with high-energy, playful canine companions who can match his enthusiasm. Flint will make an incredible partner for an active adopter looking for a handsome, fun-loving boy ready to take on the world by their side.

Mocha von Murren is a sweet and playful 12-month-old German Shepherd-mix. Mocha is friendly with everyone, people and dogs alike. She is so kind and gentle with kids she has met at the rescue, she must have had children in her former life. And she is very dog friendly. She is sharing space with other dogs, and happily bounces out, ready for playtime, whether with people or other pups. (While she's an enthusiastic YES to other dogs, she'll take a pass on sharing time with a kitty.) After a fun day of play, Mocha would love to worm her way into your heart as she settles down in your lap for some snuggle time. And like a typical shepherd, she wants to please and is highly treat-motivated to learn new commands.

Foster Dog of the Day - Hazel von Hage **Tested Well with Cats**

Per her foster mom:
"My foster girl, Hazel, tells me every day that she prefers living in a home to running loose on the streets of downtown LA … She will make a fun fur-buddy addition to any home with another dog! Please keep Hazel in mind if you’re looking for a housebroken companion who is also a ‘yes’ for cats."

Hazel von Hage is a beautiful 2-year-old German Shepherd on the smaller-side (under 50 lbs). Her sweet face and soulful eyes are matched by a calm and quiet temperament that gives way to a silly, playful pup once she has acclimated to your home. Hazel looks to her fur buddies for guidance and confidence in navigating a new home environment but quickly blossoms into a warm companion for her human family. Like any quintessential shepherd, she’s a very quick learner – mastering the doggie door and taking cues from her foster brother and sister on where to ‘do her business’ – and even sleeps quietly all night with her pack from the very first night. This remarkably versatile girl also enjoys her walks in the neighborhood, paying no attention to the yappy dogs she encounters along the way, all the while demonstrating stellar leash manners to the delight of her foster mom. Hazel would most appreciate a quieter home with a relaxed environment but tells us that she is a YES for your kitties. If you are looking for a fairly easy gal and can offer her some time and patience to acclimate, please ask for Hazel!

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Casper von Clingen

Casper von Clingen is a delightful 4-month-old white German Shepherd puppy with an affectionate, playful spirit. Naturally attentive, he loves soaking up the spotlight, settling in happily for gentle pets, and taking treats with the softest touch—he already knows how to sit and offer his paw. On leash, he does very well for such a young pup, naturally tending to stay close to his handler, responding beautifully to guidance and greeting passing dogs nicely. Casper loves being around people and other dogs and would love another dog in the home. He is great in doggy playgroup, happily mingling with puppy pals, and shows potential to play. Because he is startled by felines, he is looking for a cat-free home where he can continue his puppy training and shower his new family with cheerful companionship and endless tail wags. Casper, Legend and Madeline are all buddies; if you are thinking of more than one dog, you can mix and match!

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Madeline von Malborn

Madeline von Malborn is a gorgeous 14–16 -month-old Belgian Malinois with soft, soulful eyes and a wonderfully gentle, affectionate nature. A little shy at first, she quickly blossoms around caring people, enjoying every bit of love and showing her quiet joy with sweet, gentle tail wags. She is wonderful on leash, naturally keeping pace beside her handler, listening beautifully to direction, and making every stroll an easy, relaxing pleasure. Madeline defies breed description, she is not a typical Malinois - she isn’t a high energy, high drive dog. In playgroups she is tolerant of the other dogs, and loves staying close to people for extra affection. She also passed her initial cat evaluation with flying colors. She is ready to find a loving forever home where she can feel cherished and surrounded by lifelong companionship. She was found with Legend, who is very devoted to her; for those considering a pair, they would love to find a home together. Casper also asks not to forget him. All three dogs had been found together; we figured they were all from the same family but somehow had lost their way.

Today is Saturday, September 5th, and it is time to meet Kenny in the 2026 Dog of the Day calendar.

Today we celebrate Kenny's 9th birthday. Where does time go? I remember when he was the youngest in our household. Now he is the "old" man. Kenny came into our house as a foster on March 17, 2018. Gina, a Westside alumna, and I picked him up after attending the LA Big 5k. Kenny and his two siblings were left at the vet's office that Westside was using at that time. All three were fearful 8-month-old puppies. He blossomed in our home with Gina and Newman showing him how to be a dog, but was fearful once he stepped outside the front door. I took him to an outside adoption event with Gina as support. He spent the whole time under a folding table, curled up next to Gina. When we got home, he turned into his happy-go-lucky self again. That is when I knew he had already found his forever home. He officially became a Schmoldt on May 7, 2018. We had planned on adopting a Doberman from Dobie Rescue in Fillmore, but sometimes you do not get the dog you want but one that needs you. Kenny has brought joy and love into our house for 8 years.

Rogue von Rerik is a very handsome 12-month-old German Shepherd-mix. Rogue is a wonderful long-legged guy with a shiny coat that sheds less than most shepherds. He is a very sociable dog with a delightful outgoing personality -- friendly, happy and open to all that life has to offer. He genuinely loves meeting new people and other dogs. He's very engaging and affectionate and likes to lean into you whether you are petting him or not, this boy just loves to be close. Mid energy and housebroken, he takes treats gently and does great on his walks. Then when it's playgroup time he continues to shine, greeting other dogs with ease and playing nicely with others. (He says no to cats however.) If you are looking for a versatile and fun young dog, put Rogue at the top of your list!

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Dakota von Datteln

Dakota von Datteln is a stunning 2-year-old black-and-red long-haired German Shepherd, obviously from a quality breeder. We got him via an animal shelter after his owners had been forced to give him up and were deported to China. Dakota didn't want to leave his family, even shelter volunteers were crying, they shared some pictures of his former life. He loved to hang out with friends’ dogs, loved trips to their favorite creek for a swim, loved hikes and enjoyed being the apple of his parents’ eyes. Luckily, we got call a from a volunteer, so Dakota only spent one night at the animal shelter. He is obedience-trained, has good house-skills, and does very well in playgroups at the rescue. We are looking for an active home for him, someone who also enjoys hikes and adventures and keeps up his training. Don’t miss out on this spectacular dog!
