Yesterday I jokingly came on here to give you guys a Birdie update… that there was no Birdie update😂 And your responses completely changed my perspective.

So many of you said, “but that IS an update”🥲 Because nothing changing means nothing has gotten worse. There’s no new bad news. Our girl is still okay, still being loved and cared for, and exactly where she needs to be❤️‍🩹

I know you’re waiting, worrying and rooting for her from all over the freaking world🌎🫶🏼 and I totally agree, sometimes no news is really freaking GOOD news!

And I wanted to address a few questions we keep getting… Why aren’t we visiting? Birdie gets SO excited when she sees us😂 and right now she needs to stay as calm, still and clean as possible. As badly as we want to see her, if our presence makes healing harder, what Birdie NEEDS will always come before what we want! I’m confident she knows we love her just like I truly believe she knows you do too💕

Why does she keep getting infections? She doesn’t! There was one infection that thankfully cleared quickly. This one freaking tail incision is not infected, it simply does not want to close. The tissue looks healthy and last week’s procedure went exactly as hoped… now we WAIT and give her body time to respond.

Do we regret amputating her tail? Knowing how it’s going NOW? Of course we wish we hadn’t done it. That doesn’t mean it was a bad decision when we made it. It wasn’t. There was thought and purpose behind it, and we made that decision with her medical team.

But hindsight gives you information you didn’t have before. Knowing now that this incision is what’s keeping her from getting back to living her life?! Of course I wish I could go back in time. But life doesn’t let you remake yesterday’s decisions using today’s information.

And that’s why I think sharing this part matters too. If something we learned the hard way gives another family more information to bring to their own dog’s medical team, then something good can come from it!

For now, we wait. And today, waiting without bad news IS good news🕊️

Another hurdle officially behind us❤️‍🩹

Birdie’s procedure today went GREAT🥹 Her surgeon reopened and thoroughly cleaned that stubborn tail incision! Although the edges weren’t healing together like they should, the tissue underneath looked very healthy🙏🏼 They treated the area, closed it back up and placed a drain which will be in for at least the next 5 days!

While she was under, they were also able to remove the sutures from both of her leg amputation sites!!! There was just one tiny 1cm spot on the left side that her surgeon cleaned up and added a few stitches to, just to be extra safe.

Now we cross EVERYTHING and hope her body finally heals🤞🏼 So happy to be another step closer to getting our Birdie girl back🕊️💗

That’s some very healthy tissue! This is great to see!!

Closing her back up and hopefully this time it wants to stay closed and fully heal! Although this suture site is starting all over, her leg stitches got to come out!!🥳💗

Not the news we were hoping for… but everything is still okay😔🕊️

We got an update from Birdie’s surgeon last night. Her leg incisions are healing beautifully, the infection is completely gone, and Birdie herself is doing great🙏🏼 It’s just that stubborn little tail incision that does NOT want to heal.

We’ve given it time, but since time doesn’t seem to be enough, her surgical team is ready to take action. They’re going to open that incision back up and reclose it using a different approach, and hopefully THIS is what finally gets us over this last hurdle🤞🏼

Are we disappointed? Absolutely😭 This is not at all how we imagined spending this part of Birdie’s journey. We want our girl out of that hospital. We want her swimming, flying around in her wheels, soaking up sunshine and getting back to LIFE.

But something her surgeon said really stuck with me, “short term pain for long term gain.” Right now this feels like forever. Every extra day feels so freaking long. But when we zoom out, this is such a tiny chapter in what we hope will be a very long, happy, healthy life for Birdie. And if a little more time and one more procedure is what it takes to give her that life… then that’s what we’re going to do.

Also, can we appreciate Birdie’s surgical team for a second?!🥹 This is her surgeon taking the time to personally call us, walk us through what’s happening, explain and make sure we actually understand the plan. Having people we trust caring for her gives us as much peace as we could possibly have right now.

So one more challenge yet to overcome. They have a plan. Birdie is safe. She’s in incredible hands. The infection is GONE. The rest of her surgical sites are healing beautifully. Now we just need this one stubborn little spot to cooperate😅❤️‍🩹

We’re not going anywhere. I know you guys aren’t either. And whenever this girl FINALLY gets out of that hospital… we have a whole lot of living, loving, swimming, adventuring and celebrating to make up for🥹🌞🌊

I’ll let you guys know how the procedure goes. Come on, Birdie girl!! Let’s get this last little piece healed🤍

I have some good news and some bad news…

Unfortunately, we got a call from the hospital that one of Birdie’s stitches popped open. The GOOD news is they were right there when it happened, it has already been stitched back up, Birdie is completely okay, and she continues to receive absolutely incredible care🙏🏼

The not so fun news is… we’re not getting our girl back this weekend😭 Her body is just being a little stubborn about healing, and she needs more time in the hospital before anyone feels comfortable sending her back out into the world. Of course we’re bummed, but we never expected this process to be easy and we certainly aren’t going to give up just because it isn’t!

Her team has a new plan! Birdie is going to spend the majority of her day in her wheelchair, even while she’s hanging out in her little hospital pen. This will keep her backend elevated and off the ground, helping eliminate pressure and friction on those stubborn healing areas. But don’t worry, she won’t just be standing in her pen all day! She’ll get little strolls around the hospital like the ridiculously adorable one you’re watching here🥹♿️ WATCH OUT, BIRDIE’S COMING THROUGH!!!😂 and she’ll still get breaks from her wheels to lay down and rest, but for now, that wheelchair is becoming a much bigger part of her healing process🥲

I’m definitely sad we won’t be heading to LA this weekend to pick her up. We miss Birdie A LOT!!! But I would rather leave her there for another week than bring her home one single day too soon.

We have come way too freaking far to rush the last part💗

What do you guys think about the VERY FIRST Expedition Ola MEET UP next weekend… SUNDAY, AUGUST 23RD in Los Angeles!?!?🌞✨

We would LOVE to hug you guys and meet the people behind all these little profile pictures we see every day showing us so much love and support🥹💗 The reason we’ve never done one is we quite literally never know where we’re going to be or when😂 Our plans are constantly changing based on the dogs, vet appointments, adventures, weather, and whatever else gets thrown our way. It’s so rare that we know this far in advance exactly where we’ll be AND have plans that really can’t change between now and then… so it feels like maybe this is our chance!!!

Before we go too far with planning, we need to know would anyone actually come!?😂 Let us know in the poll if you could realistically meet us in LA next Sunday so we can get a rough idea of how many people we are looking at!

We know LA isn’t convenient for so many of you and WE’RE SORRY!!! But who knows… maybe this could become a thing!?😭🐾 So even if you can’t make this one, comment what city or country you’d love to see an Expedition Ola meetup someday!

For now though… LOS ANGELES. SUNDAY, AUGUST 23RD👀🐾 What do you guys think!?!? Should we do this!?!?💗
