One of the most important and most overlooked parts of dog training is management.

Not every unwanted behavior needs a training plan. Sometimes management helps us prevent a behavior while we work on something different… and sometimes management IS the solution.

A little leash work with my buddy Urban! 🐾

I’m using a longer leash here intentionally. I want him to have freedom to move and make good choices without constantly restricting his movement or adding tension to the leash which can add even more stress and frustration.

Loose leash walking isn’t about controlling every step your dog takes. It’s about teaching them how to move with you without pulling.

Give them room to learn!

🐾 Puppy Classes are coming to KHVC!

Puppy class is about so much more than teaching sit and down. We’ll help you build a strong foundation from the very beginning. Building confidence, positive socialization experiences, handling and veterinary care, foundation skills, and preventing common puppy problems before they start.

Just as importantly, you’ll learn how your puppy learns, how to communicate clearly, and how to reinforce the behaviors you want to see more of.

Classes are Wednesdays from 6:30–7:45 PM.

A conversation with a client this week reminded me just how much outdated information about resource guarding is still out there.

Taking your dog’s food, sticking your hands in their bowl or bothering them while they eat isn’t preventing resource guarding, it may actually help create it.

Add value, don’t create conflict.

And remember… you have a fork. Your dog has teeth. 🤣

🐶🐾 Sunday training tip!🐾

Does your dog REALLY know “come”?

If your dog comes in the house but not when there’s a squirrel, another dog or something much more interesting around, that doesn’t mean they’re stubborn. It means the behavior hasn’t been taught at that level of distraction yet.
Start easy, make coming to you worth it, and gradually increase the difficulty. And remember every time you say “come, come, COME!” while your dog ignores you, they’re practicing that too!

Don’t test a behavior you haven’t trained.

There are so many reasons our dogs may not do what we’re asking, and understanding the “why” can make us much better teachers.
