Preventative Pet Health of Michiana

Preventative Pet Health of Michiana Preventative Pet Health of Michiana is the area's very first pet preventative healthcare clinic! The expense of a yearly exam is worth it!

Preventative Pet Health of Michiana understands how critical basic veterinary care is for keeping pets with their owners, out of area shelters, and protected from preventable diseases. Our services are by appointment only, are customized for your pet and your specific lifestyle, are very affordable, and without income qualifications or restrictions. Appointments include an assessment by a licensed

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, parasite prevention/control recommendations, and administration of vaccinations. Microchip implantation, heartworm testing, FIV/FeLV testing, and routine bloodwork can also be done at this time. Preventative Pet Health of Michiana will notate and discuss all abnormalities found upon physical exam, will provide documentation of your visit to your full service veterinarian, and/or provide referrals if needed. All patients are required to be up-to-date on the rabies vaccine (if your pet is not up-to-date, you will be required to purchase the rabies vaccine when you visit the clinic with your pet), all dogs are required to be on leashes, and all cats must be in a carrier. Any sick pets will not be vaccinated, and overly aggressive pets or pets that cannot be controlled by their owner will not be vaccinated. Service may be refused to any pet owner who does not comply with our guidelines. Please understand that Preventative Pet Health of Michiana does not take the place of a regular yearly wellness exam. We recommend that you have your pet checked by your regular veterinarian once a year. While many pet owners may think this is an unnecessary expense, it can actually be something that can save your pets life. Your regular vet has the ability to find small issues on your pet during a full physical exam that can be corrected or cured early. Your regular veterinarian is the best source of information and advice on how to deal with issues surrounding the health and well-being of your pet. Please ensure that even though vaccines have been given to your pet at Preventative Pet Health of Michiana, that you make a yearly appointment with your regular vet to have a complete physical exam done.

🐾 Why Does My Puppy or Kitten Need ALL of Their Vaccine Boosters? 🐾

We often hear, “My puppy already had one vaccine—aren’t they protected?” The answer is: not yet!

When puppies and kittens are born, they receive antibodies from their mother that help protect them during their first weeks of life. While these antibodies are important, they can also interfere with vaccines, making it difficult to know exactly when a vaccine will be fully effective.

That’s why puppies and kittens need a series of booster vaccines every few weeks until they’re old enough to develop strong, lasting immunity on their own.

Skipping or delaying boosters can leave your pet vulnerable to serious diseases such as:
🐶 Parvovirus
🐶 Distemper
🐱 Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)
🐱 Upper Respiratory Viruses
🐾 And other preventable illnesses

Think of the vaccine series as building a protective shield—each booster strengthens that protection until your pet is fully covered.

The best way to give your new family member a healthy start is to complete their entire vaccine series and stay on schedule with veterinary visits.

Have questions about your puppy or kitten’s vaccine schedule? We’re happy to help! ❤️🐾

🐱❤️ June is Adopt a Cat Month! ❤️🐱

June is the perfect time to open your heart and home to a cat in need. Every year, thousands of wonderful cats and kittens wait in shelters and rescues for a family to call their own. Whether you’re looking for a playful kitten, a laid-back adult cat, or a loving senior companion, there’s a feline friend out there just for you.

Adopting a cat doesn’t just change their life—it can change yours too. Cats provide companionship, reduce stress, and fill our homes with love (and a little bit of mischief!).

If you’re considering adding a new family member, remember:
🐾 Adopt from a local shelter or rescue.
🐾 Schedule a veterinary exam soon after adoption.
🐾 Make sure your new cat is vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered.
🐾 Give them time and patience to adjust to their new home.

This month, we celebrate the joy of adoption and the special bond between cats and their people. Share a photo of your adopted cat in the comments—we’d love to see them! 🐈💕

🐾❤️ Happy National Best Friends Day! ❤️🐾

Some of the very best friendships come with four paws, a wagging tail, or a gentle purr. Through life’s happiest moments and toughest days, our pets are always there with unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship.

Today, we’re celebrating the special bond between people and their furry best friends. Whether they’re your adventure buddy, cuddle partner, walking companion, or the one who always knows when you need a little extra love, pets truly make life better.

Share a photo of your best friend in the comments—we’d love to see the faces that make your days brighter! 🐶🐱💕

🌡️ Hot Weather Is Coming — Keep Your Pets Safe! 🐾

As temperatures start to climb, it’s important to remember that our pets can overheat much faster than we do.

☀️ Heat Safety Tips:
🐶 Walk dogs during the cooler morning or evening hours.
💧 Always provide fresh, clean water.
🌳 Make sure pets have access to shade when outdoors.
🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked car — even for a few minutes.
🐾 Remember that hot pavement can burn sensitive paw pads. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet!
😺 Watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.

Certain pets, including seniors, puppies and kittens, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persians), are at an even greater risk of heat-related illness.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer water, and seek veterinary care immediately.

Let’s work together to keep our furry family members safe, healthy, and comfortable all summer long! ❤️🐾

🐱💕 Happy National Hug Your Cat Day! 💕🐱

Today is the purr-fect excuse to show your feline friend a little extra love! Whether your cat enjoys being cuddled close, sitting in your lap, or simply receiving gentle chin scratches, every cat has their own special way of saying, “I love you.”

Remember: not all cats enjoy hugs, and that’s okay! The best way to celebrate is by showing affection in a way your cat appreciates—whether that’s a cozy nap together, a favorite treat, playtime with a wand toy, or a gentle cuddle if they enjoy it.

📸 We’d love to see your furry family members! Share a photo of your cat in the comments and tell us what they love most.

Here’s to the cats who fill our homes with purrs, head boops, and endless entertainment. ❤️🐾
