Most of us feed our dogs dry (kibble) food due to it’s convenience and affordability. Even the best kibble can be lacking due to being highly processed and high in carbohydrates. Mary Straus, a pet-food researcher, recommends adding animal-source foods instead of plant-based grains, legumes, and starchy vegetables. Berlow is a list of suggested foods that can be added to your dog’s kibble. These added foods should replace no more than 25% of your dog’s daily calorie intake. If your dog has a medical condition, GI issues, or is taking medication, check with your veterinarian before making changes to your dog’s diet.
• Eggs – cooked egg whites are easier to digest than raw.
• Muscle meat – raw or lightly cooked. No bones.
• Fish- canned sardines, mackerel, pink salmon packed in water.
• Yogurt and kefir – no sugar or xylitol.
• Cottage or ricotta cheese-
• Canned pumpkin-not pumpkin pie mix.
• Cooked or pureed vegetables-carrots, celery, broccoli, zucchini.
• Fruit-small amounts of bananas, melons, pears, blueberries.

'Tis the season for visiting family and friends which might mean not taking your dog along. Fortunately, there are several options you can consider in providing your dog with a comfortable, safe sitting arrangement while you are gone.
* Ask a trusted neighbor, family member, or friend to stay with your dog while you are away..
* Ask your veterinarian, trainer, groomer, and friends for referrals for in-home sitters or boarding facilities based on their positive experiences.
* In home sitters: The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters; Pet Sitters International; Rover.com

If you decide to board your dog or have someone stay in your home, always tour the facility or schedule an in-person interview with the prospective sitter.

Think about how you feel when someone suddenly wakes you from a deep sleep. Your startle behavior is an involuntary reflexive response that may leave you feeling disoriented, stressed, and on the defensive. Our dogs are no different. It's important to use gentle waking methods when you need to wake your dog to provide them with a sense of security and well-being. This is critical for all dogs but especially for dogs who may have diminished hearing due to age, medical issues, or genetics. Dogs who are frequently startled from sleep can develop defensive behaviors to protect them from what scared them. Hypervigilance and anxiety can result due to a lack of the dog getting adequate restful sleep. Here are some gentle ways to wake your dog.
- Gently blow on the dog's fur.
- Softly wiggle the edge of the dog's blanket or dog bed.
- Floor vibrations. Take slightly heavier steps as you approach where your dog is sleeping so they feel the vibrations through the floor.
- Gently brush your hand along your dog's side or shoulder to help them transition to wakefulness.
- Hold a smelly treat close to your dog's nose to ease them awake. When your dog awakes there is a yummy treat waiting for them to help create positive feelings with waking up.

A recent research study demonstrated that chewing post-training improved memory consolidation in dogs directly reducing the amount of training required in a specific learning task. More research needs to be done to help determine how chewing consolidates learning memory. Until then, try giving your dog a long-lasting safe chew after a training session to boost his memory!

What's your dog's jam? For Rocky, it's an egg - a large, hard plastic egg made by Jolly Pets. Rocky is a very athletic dog who enjoys activities involving chasing after something, chewing, and using his front paws. Due to the eggs shape and hard plastic, it moves and rolls in very unpredictable patterns, which keeps Rocky engaged. Because of the hard plastic, Rocky can't quite get a good hold on the egg to chew which results in the egg shooting out from his paws, enticing him to chase it. Watch the video to see how Rocky moves the egg around with his paws, which is something he does when interacting in particular environments. This type of activity may not be what your dog enjoys doing, but it is worthwhile to think about what activities meets your dog's needs and allows them to engage in what they enjoy. Find your dog's jam. https://positiveinteractionsdogbehaviorandtraining.com

The ZOOMIES...the CRAZIES...the BUTTS ON FIRE. No matter what you call it, they all involve your dog getting a crazy look in his eyes, tucking his butt and taking off running wild laps around the house or yard. The official scientific term for this behavior is frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs). These behaviors appear to provide a release of pent-up energy, and possibly , to relieve stress. FRAPs are common in puppies and adolescent dogs, but mature dogs can continue to get the zoomies occasionally throughout their lives. Zoomies may be your dog's way of telling you that they need more exercise and mental stimulation. FRAPs are normal, but a dog zooming around the house or yard may be in danger of injuring themselves or breaking something.

Does your dog wear a harness? A well-fitted harness is an excellent tool to begin working on a dog's leash walking skills and help to reduce pulling. However, depending on the style of harness, some types may interfere with the dog's movement and gait. Some veterinarians have reported an increase in dogs who have suffered injuries or chronic pain from these harnesses. If you run with your dog or enjoy long walks on a regular basis, you might want to consider a "Y" shaped harness that forms a "Y" across the dog's shoulder blades vs a chest-strap harness that has a single, horizontal strap across the chest. The photos show both types with the chest area highlighted. No matter what style you choose, make sure it fits your dog properly - snug enough to fit just two fingers under the straps and no chafing, especially behind the elbows.
