All horses need access to the three "F's" - Forage, Friends and Freedom to be happy and healthy. At Circle C all of our horses, minus the those with metabolic issues, have 24 hour access to some sort of forage. They all get turned out in herd groups and have freedom in the fields and in their stalls to move and interact with their environment as they choose. Some horses need one more thing and Chance is a great example. Enrichment for a busy brain, but we love alliteration, so we'll call it Fun.

As we head into Fall programming a reflection on what makes a great Girl Scout program horse...all the things that make a great horse in general, of course. Then there are the qualities that are harder to define, Rio being a great example. He had to stay in, when all of his friends went out, he had to stand quietly to have his legs scrubbed with a medicated soap, get sprayed with a really suspicious aerosol spray, walk past a box that wasn't there in the morning- so, super suspicious, head out to the field where on the way he was viciously menaced by several deer and the blue heron that patrols our pond. He was able to be a perfect gentleman through all of that, worried eyes, slightly tense body, but respectful about human personal space and his usual slow pace. When he was off the clock, free to express himself, his little hop and canter was his only big explosion. He went to the top of the field, peeked through the trees to find the herd and then walked to the closest gate and joined them. Whatever that quality is, that's what we need when we are teaching beginners. Horses will always horse, they reach their limit like the rest of us, but it's comforting to know Rio has a pretty high bar. He's is absolutely worth his weight in senior food and Farrier's Formula.

A special thank you to the Riding Instructors-In-Training for bringing camp magic to life this summer! While expanding your leadership skills, you helped create memories that will last a lifetime!

The Riding Instructor-In-Training (RIIT) program is a leadership and horsemanship development experience designed for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors. Through this program, RIITs build courage, confidence and character while developing their skills in horsemanship and leadership with the help of our Circle C herd. Throughout the year, RIIT participants log volunteer hours, which they can exchange for exclusive riding sessions and other special RIIT-only opportunities.
