Are Community Cats Harmful to Birds, Mammals and Other Native Species Populations? 🤔

The short answer is yes, Community Cats are a risk to native species (including birds, reptiles, and small mammals). 😿

The long answer is Community Cats are not the largest threat to native animals and wildlife, and the only viable humane and proven solution to feline overpopulation (thus ending the threat) is TN(V)R (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return). 👍🐈

We understand that outdoor, feral, and community cats can pose a risk to birds and other native species, but we do not believe this justifies poisoning, hurting, or killing the cats to lessen the population and therefore the harmful effects of overpopulation. In addition, many studies have been conducted that state that killing the cats doesn’t end overpopulation. 🐈🐈🐈🐈

In addition, members of the public can utilize safe & humane cat deterrent strategies to keep cats away from bird feeders or out of your unsuspecting neighbor’s lawn. 😻

Solutions include using motion-activated water sprinklers, an ultrasonic animal repellant, add rue to gardens or soil, or scatter natural fragrant items like fresh orange or lemon peels.🍊🍋

Almost 100% of pets exposed to minoxidil required hospitalization in a recent report, and all reported deaths occurred in cats. Most cats were exposed through contact with treated humans, including licking their owner's skin or exposure to contaminated bedding, while most dogs were exposed through exploratory behavior, such as rummaging through trash.

Minoxidil is a commonly used hair regrowth medication, but it can be highly toxic to pets. Signs of poisoning may develop within 30 minutes of exposure and include loss of appetite, lethargy, difficulty breathing, weakness, rapid heart rate, and fluid accumulation in the lungs.

Of the 94 reported cases reviewed, 68 involved cats and 26 involved dogs. Approximately 15% of exposed cats died, highlighting their increased susceptibility to minoxidil toxicity.

Pet owners using minoxidil should take precautions to prevent exposure. Wash hands thoroughly after application, prevent pets from licking treated skin, avoid allowing pets access to contaminated pillows or bedding, and store products securely out of reach.

Any suspected exposure should prompt immediate veterinary attention.

Scary stuff, be sure to keep a close eye on your fur babies!

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently reported the first cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the United States since its eradication from the country in 1966.

This serious and potentially impactful parasite of livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people, was detected in two calves in Zavala and La Pryor Counties, Texas and a dog in Le county, New Mexico. The first case was reported on June 3rd, 2026.

Officials are monitoring the situation closely and instituting a concerted response involving increased surveillance, quarantines, livestock movement restrictions, trapping of adult NWS flies, and the release of sterile NWS flies designed to help control the parasites spread and to ultimately eradicate it from the US once again.

The adult NWS fly lays its eggs into wounds in the skin of susceptible animals, and its developing larvae feed upon the healthy tissue of their host. Infestation can occur in any warm-blooded animal and can range in severity from mild to potentially life-threatening.

Cats are at risk of infestation, particularly if they are allowed outside; and owners (particularly those near the US/Mexico border) are advised to monitor their cats closely for wounds (cuts, surgical sites, bite wounds) that grow rapidly, are accompanied by foul-smelling discharge, and/or that demonstrate visible larvae (worm-like organisms) in or around the wound. Affected cats may show behavioral signs such as excessive licking or scratching at an infested wound.

If any of these signs are observed, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately to assure prompt stabilization and antiparasitic treatment. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued an emergency use authorization for lotilaner (brand name Credelio CAT, currently approved as a flea/tick preventative in cats) as a treatment for NWS infestation in cats.

Just picked up these little ones who are about 2 days old, one of them will likely lose a leg as the cord was wrapped around it and cut off the circulation. 😿The other picture is another baby we received May 1 at 1 day old. A huge heartfelt Thank you to a supporter of ours who donated funds to purchase the incubator which is being put to good use! Well sleep is overrated anyway.🐈‍⬛🐈 Any donations would be greatly appreciated as kitty milk is very expensive.
