Hello Four Town family!

This is just to let you know that the practice will be closed Monday, September 7 in celebration of Labor Day. If you need to refill medications before the holiday weekend, please give us a call as soon as you can--ideally before noon on Friday so we'll definitely have time to fill them! We'll reopen Tuesday as normal.

In the meantime, here are some tips for ensuring a fun, relaxing holiday spent with your family, furry and otherwise!

Hey Four Town family!

As many of you know, our very own Dr. K has long rescued Dobermans, and she's worked in the past with Doberman Rescue Unlimited, Inc., an organization founded in New Hampshire in 1983. They've rescued thousands of unwanted or mistreated Dobermans over the years, and found them loving homes. Since they receive no government or agency funding, they're entirely reliant on donations from kind people. For this year's fundraiser, they're holding a calendar photo contest, where the top 80 submitted photos will be chosen by popular vote. Dr. K has submitted her very own Blaze! If you want to vote for this adorable pup, you get one vote per $1 donated to DRU. Details attached!

Here at Four Town, we pride ourselves in having a small, tightly-knit team. That's how you know you'll see the same faces each time you come in, and how you know our staff work together tirelessly to provide your pets with the best possible care. Recently Dr. Sefton, Adele, Charlotte, and Stephanie took in a Hartford Yard Goats ballgame together!

August is Itchy Pet Awareness month, so we wanted to take a moment to talk about itchiness in pets, what can cause it, and what to do about it.

Pets itch for the same reasons we do--dry skin, allergies, or even an infection by mites, parasites, bacteria, or fungus. Although (again, just like us) all animals will scratch themselves occasionally, if you notice your pet licking, rubbing, chewing, or scratching persistently, it may be that the itch is not going away--and in that case, it might be time to contact us to see if there is reason for concern.

There are also other signs of itch which might not be immediately obvious--head shaking, hair loss, rashes, or scabs being the most common ones--but which can let you know that your pet is uncomfortable. Not only do we want to make sure our furry friends are comfortable, but if left untreated, scratching and itching could lead to behavioral changes or even a more dangerous infection.

The good news is that itching is one of the most common issues for which pets are seen at veterinary clinics in general and also here at Four Town Vet. We have a wide range of possible treatments, ranging from allergy testing to medicated shampoos to oral or injected medications. As with all cases we see, we tailor our approach to the individual pet and their needs.

Hey Four Town family!

This Saturday is International Cat Day! We recently put up a post asking for pictures of your canine bestest boys and girls, so this is a great excuse for our feline friends to shine! Give us your cutest, silliest, weirdest, or just plain favorite picture of your kitty pals.

Just to start, here's one of Dr. Sefton's cats, Percival! He's an Oriental Shorthair, and she rescued him just over one year ago. He thinks he's a gargoyle (and he kinda looks like one, too!).

July 26 is National Dog Photography Day! In honor of the day, let's see your cutest, goofiest, handsomest, prettiest dog pictures of the year so far! We'll start: here's a picture of Dr. Sefton's own adorable (and mischievous) sprocker spaniel, Re*****on, who as some of you may know spends each and every day with us here at the practice!

(For those wondering, yes, that is a stuffed octopus, and yes, it goes everywhere with him.)

Hello everyone, we have some exciting news: we're hiring!

Not only that, but we're not necessarily looking for someone with direct industry experience. Here's why: we think that there are lots of eager folks out there--freshly out of school or looking for a new career--with the passion for animals, the attention to detail, and the team-spiritedness to thrive in the industry, but who can't get a job because they don't have prior experience. Here at Four Town, we want to invest in our staff--giving them all the training they need to succeed.

Hello Four Town family--

Well, looks like the dog days of summer are here, and with them our first bout of extreme heat. The State of Connecticut has issued an Extreme Heat Watch from Tuesday, June 30 through Sunday, July 5. Make sure your pets always have a way to get out of direct sunlight and access to cool water, and keep an eye out for the warning signs of heatstroke.
