🚨 PORCUPINES: A WARNING TO DOG OWNERS! 🚨
Twin Cities Veterinary Clinic has seen RECORD numbers of porcupine quill emergencies across the Kenai Peninsula, including Soldotna, Kenai, Nikiski, Kasilof, and Sterling.
Many of these emergencies involve dogs allowed outdoors unsupervised, uncontained, or free-roaming. We urge pet owners to take these encounters seriously.
🦔 WHY DO DOGS APPROACH PORCUPINES?
Porcupines are slow-moving, unusual, and have interesting scents that attract curious dogs. They are primarily nocturnal, can climb trees, porches, and some fencing, and will defend themselves when threatened. Unfortunately, many dogs are REPEAT OFFENDERS and don't learn from their first painful encounter!
⚠️ QUILLS CAN BE LIFE-THREATENING!
Porcupine quills have tiny backward-facing barbs that make removal difficult. They can break off beneath the skin, migrate deeper into tissues, cause infections and abscesses, puncture internal organs (including the lungs and heart), and cause permanent injury or even death.
Quills are made of keratin and generally aren't visible on standard X-rays. Retained quills can cause complications weeks or months later!
🚫 DO NOT REMOVE QUILLS YOURSELF!
Attempting removal at home can break quills and cause further damage. Most dogs require heavy sedation or general anesthesia for safe, thorough removal.
We CANNOT prescribe sedatives for owners to perform quill removal at home. Please seek veterinary care immediately!
🐕 PREVENTION IS KEY:
✅ Secure fencing and outdoor enclosures.
✅ Supervise pets whenever outdoors.
✅ Leash-walk instead of allowing free roaming.
✅ Use extra caution at dusk and nighttime.
💰 PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES!
Quill removal can be expensive, especially after hours. Emergency savings, pet insurance, or financing options can help. Keeping annual wellness exams current and establishing care with a local veterinarian BEFORE an emergency may also help streamline treatment and reduce certain costs.
