Some patients leave a hoofprint on your heart. ❤️🐴

There are weeks in veterinary medicine that feel a little heavier than others.

As equine veterinarians, we are fortunate to be part of so many chapters in a horse’s life. We celebrate new beginnings, recoveries, accomplishments, retirements, and all the ordinary days in between. We get to know their personalities, their quirks, and the people who love them.

And then, sometimes, our job is to help them leave this world peacefully and with dignity.

Those moments are never “just another day at work.” We feel the weight of them too. We understand the love behind every difficult decision and the heartbreak that comes with saying goodbye.

Being invited into those final moments is one of the hardest parts of veterinary medicine, but it is also one of the greatest privileges.

To anyone who has recently had to say goodbye to a beloved horse: we are thinking of you. We know that the barn feels a little emptier, the routine feels different, and the silence where that familiar nicker or hoofbeat used to be can be incredibly hard.

Run free, sweet friends. You were loved, and you will be missed. 🌈🐴❤️

You are what you eat—and a foal is what the mare eats.

🐴Exciting new research shows that mare "over-nutrition" can prime foals for health issues later in life. Specifically, overfeeding pregnant mares is linked to rising rates of insulin dysregulation and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) in the equine population.

We already know that maternal nutrition—both in utero and during nursing—plays a critical role in developmental issues, including:
*Metabolic Bone Disease
*Osteochondrosis Dissecans (OCD)
*Angular Limb Deformities

This new data indicates that a mare's diet also directly shapes her foal's metabolic system.

Our Approach to Mare Health At BVS
Our core nutritional program focuses on three main elements:
*High-quality hay or pasture
*A ration balancer
*Daily Vitamin E supplementation

Our ultimate goal is maintaining the perfect body condition score—a mare who is not too fat and not too skinny!

Need expert guidance?
Contact BVS today to schedule a nutritional consultation. We will help you properly feed and maintain your mare from breeding all the way to weaning.

Dr. Barrow has been and is currently serving on the New World Screwworm AAEP working group. Please be vigilant in learning and knowing what to look for in this emerging disease!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided an important update on New World Screwworm which has been detected in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. Read the full press release here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/news/agency-announcements/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states

General information about New World Screwworm (NWS) can be found in the text below and in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger), with orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along its back. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go. The maggots (larvae) cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue.

Because they feed on live flesh, NWS maggots may burrow deep into wounds or openings, while other species of maggots may appear around the outer surface of the wound. In addition, even the smallest wounds have the potential to attract flies, so it is imperative that you keep a close eye on your animals for any signs of wounds.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian.
