Please be mindful and stay clear of wildlife and report any unusual behaviors or bites. If your pet is overdue for a rabies vaccine, please do not wait as this is a VERY concerning situation.

North Carolina law requires cats and dogs to be vaccinated against rabies. The first vaccination should occur when the dog or cat is no more than four months old; the second vaccination is required no more than a year later and then again, every three years.
If any animal bites you:
• Wash the wound with soap and running water for ten (10) minutes and seek medical attention immediately.
• Write down the location of the animal and provide a description of the animal for animal control. If the animal is someone’s pet, also get the owner’s name and address. Give this information to animal control or the health department.
• Do not try to catch any wild or stray animals.

A case of rabies has been confirmed with an exposure to 4 people in Alamance County from a rabid cat.
NC Law requires all domestic dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies. It is very important that your pets rabies vaccine status is up to date. Minimum age requirements in NC is 12 weeks of age. Please give your veterinary facility a call to schedule an appointment or to check the status of your pets vaccination history.

The exposure came from a rabid cat.
