This week we’re featuring success stories to celebrate our swim lesson and swim therapy clients, as some clients start their swim therapy journey needing swimming lessons.
Many have gone on to enjoy activities like dock diving, paddle boarding, and water play in rivers and lakes, and most are now confident swimmers.
If we helped your dog learn how to swim and you would like to share photos and/or videos of them utilizing their swimming skills beyond our Canine Therapy Pool, please send them our way.
We love seeing our swim lesson and swim therapy dogs thrive and can't wait to see your amazing swimmers!
Since the dogs will be featured alphabetically, we start off with Adira.
Meet Adira: Last year, Adira came to us for swim therapy for a soft tissue injury but only had limited water experience. This is very common for new swim therapy dogs.
Initially, she swam with a life vest and was pretty nervous. After a few sessions, she decided she enjoyed the massage portion of her sessions enough to tolerate the swimming. As her skills improved, she only needed a float collar but still had little interest in retrieving toys.
Enter her “brother” Groot, (who will be featured in a future post), who also had limited water experience. Once his swim skills improved, and since he loves toys, he found the joy of retrieving the rubber chicken toys. Since Adira was not going to be out done it was “game on!”. She soon developed a love for retrieving chicken toys too, so much so she started to jump off the platform while doing so. As you can see from the videos, it led to expanding her skills to include Dock Diving.
When not enjoying her swim therapy sessions, Adira participates in Flyball tournaments and competes in NASDA and NACSW Scent work. To support her Dock Diving goal, we are working on Adira’s interest in retrieving bumpers and other toys besides her beloved pink chicken!
Many thanks to Lauren, (Adira’s mom), for including me as part of Adira’s recovery team, as well as Adira and her brother Groot for their continued support of my swim therapy services.
