Some might not be able to imagine to walk more than one dog at once but that’s exactly what one of our trainers has been working on with some of our breeding dogs. The point of these pack walks is not for them all to become friends but rather for them to proof their obedience and manners out in the world as well as get some exercise. Working two dogs at once is not only a lot for the handler but also the dogs. For a lot of dogs, it takes quite a bit of self control to be able to work alongside another dog.
The first group our trainer worked with consisted of Selma, Quabs and Isa. Quabs is one of our breeding males and has bred both Selma and Isa in the past. While they are not currently in heat, they are both intact females. Yet, he is perfectly capable of walking alongside them.
The second group that got to go out consisted of Kati, Panta and Quaba. All three of these girls are mature intact females that have all had pups in the past. Statistically, intact females are the most likely to have conflicts. Kati for example is not a big fan of other dogs, especially females, but our trainer handled all three in a way in which she was able to tolerate both Quaba and Panta.
All this goes to say that dogs, intact or not, are more than capable of coexisting if you approach it right. It takes a lot of work from the handler and there always is a potential for conflicts but when it works out it is great for everyone involved.
