Adopt Don’t Shop? 🤔 Let’s Talk About It…
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t fully agree with “Adopt Don’t Shop.” Here’s why 👇
The “Adopt Don’t Shop” movement has been pushed more than ever — and while the intention is great, it’s not always the best fit for every person or family.
Many shelters, rescues, and adoption centers are realistically receiving backyard bred or genetically unstable dogs. Now — don’t get me wrong — there are AMAZING dogs that come from rescues ❤️ But there are also dogs that people adopt and unknowingly sign up for years of training just to help them become stable and comfortable in everyday life.
The truth is…
A lot of people wanting a dog aren’t necessarily looking for:
• Years of training
• Behavioral challenges
• Difficulty in public settings
• Ongoing management
And unfortunately, shelters and rescues aren’t always fully transparent. Their goal is to get dogs adopted (which I understand), but sometimes that means minimizing potential challenges or unknowns.
Another big issue?
Many adopters don’t receive adequate support after bringing their dog home. Suddenly, you’re in way over your head… but you’ve already formed a bond. Returning them feels heartbreaking, so you keep trying — even when it’s overwhelming.
You wanted a dog to do everything with…
Now you have a dog you have to do everything for.
I completely understand the heart behind adopting — and I respect it. But from personal experience, sometimes it can be far more than someone is prepared for.
In my opinion, well-bred, stable, predictable dogs are often worth the upfront investment.
Yes, they can be more expensive initially… but would you rather:
💰 Pay more upfront and have fewer issues long-term
OR
💸 Pay less upfront and potentially deal with endless training, behavior issues, and medical bills?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — and that’s okay.
Do you support Adopt Don’t Shop?
Are you fully for it, against it, or do you just do what fits best for you?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments 👇
