Sometimes you donāt find the animal. They find you.
As many of our New London Farm family know, we tragically lost our beloved mule, Poncho, two years ago. It broke our hearts. I always said I would never look for another mule, but I also always said that if another mule was meant to be part of our family, he would find us.
Three days ago, I was told about a mule named Levi who was in a really bad situation. His previous owner had to sell him because of financial hardship, but the person who bought him promised her that he would be loved, cared for and stay with them. Instead, they immediately took him to a sale barn. They had lied to her.
Levi was scared and had trouble being led. Instead of being patient with him, they were very harsh, put chains around his nose, through his mouth and drug him. His previous owner was desperately trying to save him and make sure he wasnāt abused or sold to a kill buyer.
Then the sale barn owner threatened to shoot Levi if she didnāt stop asking about him.
That was when I knew I had to act. I couldnāt sit back and wonder what was going to happen to him.
Then I saw his eyes.
Those big, soulful eyes were terrified, and I just couldnāt leave him there. I called the sale barn and told them I wanted to buy him. Yesterday, Levi came home to New London Farm.
Heās safe now. Weāre going to take our time with him, earn his trust and show him that people can be kind.
And honestly, I canāt help but wonder if Poncho had something to do with bringing this sweet boy to us.
Welcome home, Levi. ā¤ļø You have found your forever home.
This is what New London Farm is about ā giving animals a second chance, loving them, caring for them and letting them know they are safe.
So, for all of our students here at New London Farm and anyone passing through, when you see a very large mule with big soulful eyes and the biggest ears of all time, please say hello to him and welcome him home.
