One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is believing that training and management are the same thing.

They’re not.

🐾 Training teaches your dog what you want them to do.
🐾 Management prevents them from practicing behaviors you don’t want.

Think of it this way:

If your dog is reactive, training might involve teaching engagement, neutrality, and alternative behaviors around triggers.

Management might involve using distance, a leash, a crate, a muzzle, or avoiding situations your dog isn’t ready for yet.

The truth is, successful behavior modification requires BOTH.

Too often, people stop managing behaviors before their dog has developed the skills to handle real-world situations. This can lead to setbacks, frustration, and the feeling that “training isn’t working.”

Management isn’t failure.
Management isn’t avoiding the problem.
Management is setting your dog up for success while learning takes place.

The goal is to eventually rely less on management and more on your dog’s training but that only happens when we trust the process.

👇 What’s a management strategy that has helped your dog succeed?
