Buffy gettin comfortable with people, places and things. Back in the day we forced dogs into stressful, socially pressured situations and wondered why they overreacted. Now we move slower and from a greater distance. I let Buffy approach and retreat according to her comfort not mine. She gets to experience the world safely and we get to spend time together without worrying about people, dogs or environments.

I don't want to own a trained dog. I want to be a free animal spending time with another free animal. I imagine that's a specific market I appeal to and that's ok. ❤️🐾🌲

Some of the luck....
Relaxation takes practice. Ever try to meditate in your living room with guests over? There's a lot going on all the time for a dog and it's all more interesting than laying down on a cot. It takes practice and reinforcement. The tie back is a physical reminder to stay on the cot. Helps wait her out. During consultations you probably saw Furda on a cot uninterested in you and your dog because she has meditated with people in her living room thousands of times. Dogs deserve relaxation and quiet moments.

A little socialization drill with Miss Buffy. We used to throw dogs into stressful situations, have them meet a ton of people and dogs and call it socialization. We thought that it was a way to desensitize or create a positive association with people/dogs. We did it for years. We were wildly wrong. What we did was create anxious, overwhelmed and reactive dogs. Dogs that couldn't trust environments or people to make safe choices. We pushed dogs too far and stacked a bunch of emotional triggers for them. Horrible. We didn't know better. I don't know if we'll say the same thing about this technique in a couple years but this is how we do it now. We allow the dogs to experience new things from a distance. We let dogs move slower and with some more autonomy. We challenge them at a slower pace. Not too slow that we help facilitate a fearful dog, but just enough to help them build their own confidence and experience some freedom in this life. Dogs can hear a heartbeat 2 rooms away and smell a grain of sugar in an olympic size swimming pool. This is close enough. ❤️

That time I taught 4 month old Furda to lick my hand on cue so I could easily open a p**p bag on a walk.
