When I first moved to Central Oregon in 2020, and I found out that my next door neighbor, Emily Buring, ā literally sharing a pasture line ā was a multi-mustang training veteran with experience in several different competitions, I about lost my mind at my good fortune.
Iād always wanted to compete in a mustang challenge ever since I saw an ad for āMustang Millionā in a Young Rider magazine in 5th grade, but I didnāt have a mentor to teach me the ropes and was honestly too nervous to try in on my own without that support. When I discovered that Emily had that experience and was quite literally over-the-moon excited to teach me her ways⦠I was set!
Emily shared with me more than just her training methods and advice. She shared her passion for mustangs and all horses and her enthusiasm for giving to others. Emily donated hundreds of hours to *anyone* that asked. I myself have thousands of text between the two of us, chatting about difficult horses and horses we wanted to adopt and even more recently, future plans to show our horses together. She taught me to gentle the wild ones, corrected my mistakes and praised my accomplishments. She taught me how she likes to show mustangs, educated me on how I should ride my patterns, and offered advice on literally anything I could ever wonder about. And despite all the time she gave to me, I never could get her to accept a gift of appreciation unless I physically left something in her door step.
Every mustang, literally every single one, Iāve ever worked with has had Emilyās advice behind it. She tuned into every live stream at a Teens competition to cheer me on, drove over to help me with horses even when she moved out of Sisters, and watched every training video I ever made and read every needlessly-wordy paragraph I ever wrote and offered her wisdom when I desperately needed it. She even used her artistic eyes and designed for me the logo I use for my tallow soap (and no, I couldnāt get her to accept anything for that either, I had to leave a bundle of soap inside her truck!).
She was recording and helping me at some of my most memorable moments, notably here the tag removal and my first ride on my first ever (and favorite) mustang Lola from Palomino Buttes.
Emily, you will be forever missed. I am so grateful for everything you ever helped me with. Keep training those mustangs in the sky š©·
