Rabies is still here — and prevention matters. 🐾

Several rabies-positive animals have been confirmed in the Upstate in recent weeks, including a rabid skunk reported in the Fountain Inn area on August 25.

This is an important reminder to make sure your pets are current on their rabies vaccinations — even pets that spend most or all of their time indoors. Bats and other wildlife can find their way into homes and yards, creating an exposure when you least expect it.

Rabies can affect dogs, cats, wildlife, livestock and people, and once symptoms develop, the disease is almost always fatal. The good news? Vaccination is highly effective at preventing rabies.

A few important reminders:
- Rabies is a required vaccine Keep your dog or cat's rabies vaccination up to date.
- Avoid handling wildlife or stray animals, especially animals behaving unusually.
- If your pet has contact with a bat, skunk, raccoon, fox or other wildlife — or comes home with a wound of unknown origin — contact your veterinarian promptly.
