Veterinarians are warning pet parents to be on the lookout for signs of screwworm infestations on their pets after three new cases have been confirmed of New World screwworm, including a rare instance involving a dog in New Mexico.

Flies typically lay eggs in open wounds on warm-blooded animals, so watching for new wounds on your pets is crucial. Wounds that appear swollen, red, and itchy need to be evaluated by a veterinarian promptly.

Checking their belly, under their armpits, and other areas where hotspots tend to form regularly can help protect your pet against this disease.

Additionally, some preventative meds pets regularly take like flea and tick medications can help protect pets.

Officials are working to cull the outbreak by utilizing sterilization methods in flies as quickly as possible.
