🍂 Fall hiking season is HERE — and it's the best time of year to hit the trail with your dog.

Cooler temps, fall colors, fewer bugs, emptier trails. Plus — some of the best adventures are a short drive away.

A few trail-smart reminders before you go:

🥾 Match the hike to YOUR dog. A 10-mile mountain trek is amazing for a fit young athlete — and miserable for a senior, a puppy, or a couch-potato companion. Start shorter than you think and build up. A tired dog isn't a "good tired" if they're sore for three days.

💧 Pack water and a bowl for both of you. Cool air doesn't mean no dehydration.

🐕 Keep them close. Wildlife is stocking up for winter and extra active right now — a long line gives freedom without the risk.

🎒 Bring the essentials: p**p bags, treats for recall practice, and first-aid basics.

The trail will still be there next weekend. Go at your dog's pace and you'll both actually enjoy it.

🎃 Halloween is two and a half weeks away — the perfect time to prep your pup!

🔔 Doorbell dread: If your dog loses it at the doorbell, start now. Pair the sound with treats — play a doorbell tone on your phone at low volume, then treat. Short sessions, big payoff by the 31st.

👻 Costume test drive: Don't wait until Halloween night to discover the costume is a no. Let your dog sniff it, drape it loosely, treat generously. If they're not happy, skip it — a festive bandana totally counts!

🍬 Candy lockdown: Chocolate and xylitol (in sugar-free candy) are toxic to dogs. Keep the bowl up high and make a candy-trade plan with the kids.

A little prep now = a calmer Halloween for everyone. 🧡

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and we want to honor a 10,000-year partnership: Indigenous peoples and their dogs.

Dogs arrived in the Americas alongside the first peoples, over 10,000 years ago. They hunted, hauled, stood watch, and were family. The Xoloitzcuintli was sacred to the Mexica, believed to guide souls through the underworld. And for thousands of years, the Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest carefully bred the woolly dog — a small, fluffy dog whose soft undercoat was sheared and woven into ceremonial blankets. These dogs were cherished: fed salmon, combed regularly, and kept on islands apart from other dogs.

Colonization nearly erased these ancient lineages. Genetic research shows the pre-contact dogs of the Americas rapidly disappeared after Europeans arrived — through disease, persecution, and displacement. The Salish woolly dog is extinct; only a single pelt survives, a dog named Mutton who died in 1859, now held at the Smithsonian.

The bond between people and dogs on this continent is ancient, deep, and Indigenous. Every time we train with patience, kindness, and respect, we honor a partnership that began thousands of years before us.

Dogs are masters at hiding pain. 🐾

By the time a dog limps, they've often been hurting for weeks. But long before that, pain shows up as behavior: sudden reactivity, snapping when touched, reluctance on walks, avoiding stairs, pulling away from play — or a dog who just seems "off."

These aren't training problems. They're communication. Your dog is telling you something hurts.

That's why I trained as a Dynamic Dog Practitioner — to read gait and movement for the subtle signs of pain hiding behind behavior changes. If your dog's behavior has shifted, let's do a discomfort assessment together. Then we train with the full picture.
