🐾 The True Mark of a Trained K-9 🐾

In this video you’ll see K9 Dayak doing what he was trained to do — powerful, controlled bitework with precision and purpose.

But that’s only half the story.

The true measure of a well-trained working dog isn’t just the power they can show in training or on deployment — it’s their ability to turn it off just as quickly, after the work is done, Dayak is calmly laying with his handler’s granddaughter, gentle and relaxed.

That balance is what real training produces. Control, clarity, and a dog that understands exactly when it’s time to work and when it’s time to simply be part of the family.

“Power when it’s needed. Gentle when it matters.”

Nothing makes us prouder than seeing our dogs out in the community doing what they were trained to do. 💙🐾

K9 Telly is a KnightWatch K-9 now serving with an outstanding department — and it’s awesome to see her connecting with the next generation during this school visit. These moments matter. They build trust, educate kids about working dogs, and show the professionalism behind every K9 team.

Great job to her amazing Handler, the department, and of course K9 Telly. Keep making an impact out there — we love seeing our dogs succeed in the field.

As you walk into 2026, do not forget, its not all about the bitework. Its about building stability, control and capping drive. Make it a habit to put stability drills into your training regime. Your K9 should be able to work in any environment, with kids, other dogs and handlers present. You never know when you might have to pass your K9 off or what environment you may find yourself in.

We do not rush dogs, we do prefer lines that are not slow to mature. We wait to do any advanced civil work until the dog is mentally mature. This prevents the dog from becoming dirty on the bite. There are a lot in the PPD world that are loose about letting their dog become dirty. This concept is wrong. A dog can be trained in civil work and still target correctly. Civil work prior to a dog being mentally mature can also create conflict between dog and handler. Everytime the muzzle comes out, the dog should not think “bitework.” The muzzle must equal more than bitework. The dog must be reliable in the muzzle doing obedience, obstacle work, stability drills and other exercises other than bitework. The muzzle should not be a “cue” to the dog for bitework or it will develop bad habits for later down the road. We want a dog built in a foundation of stability and balance, with the ability to cap its drive.
