September 11, 2001.

For most Americans, this is the day they remember where they were when the world changed.

For me, it was also the first day of my journey in the United States Navy.

I walked into boot camp that day not knowing how profoundly those word…United States Navy… would come to mean to me. I certainly didn’t know that the day I raised my hand and began serving would forever be remembered as one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

I remember the fear. I remember the uncertainty. And I remember realizing that I had joined something much bigger than myself.

Twenty-five years later, September 11 still carries a weight that’s hard to put into words. I remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless men and women who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

Today, I honor them.

I honor the 2,977 innocent lives taken that day.
I honor the heroes who gave everything trying to save others.
I honor the families who still carry that loss.
And I honor every service member who stepped forward when our country needed them.

I will always remember September 11, 2001, not only as the day America was attacked, but as the day I began my life of service.

I am forever grateful that I had the privilege to wear the uniform.
