Celebrating 21 years of Stephanie at VVC! 🎉🐾

For 21 years, Stephanie has been part of the Virginia Veterinary Centers family and today, she is the leader of our Short Pump location, overseeing an incredible team across Neurology, Dentistry, Oncology, Radiology, Surgery, Emergency, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Critical Care.

Stephanie’s favorite part of VVC? The people.
“What I love most about VVC is being surrounded by people who are capable of doing extraordinary things for animals every single day. I get to be a part of some of the most advanced veterinary medicine in the country, and there is something incredibly special about seeing a patient everyone was fighting for beat the odds and go home to the people who love them.”

Outside of work, Stephanie is all about fitness, weightlifting, hiking, biking, stand-up comedy, live music, and reading. She’s also a mom of three and a proud pet mom to an elderly pit bull and two perfect cats, all adopted from RACC.
Stephanie, thank you for 21 years of dedication, leadership, and heart.

We’re so lucky to have you leading our Short Pump team! 💙

🚨 When an emergency happens, every second matters. 💙🐾
When Lucy suddenly ingested something toxic, Apryl rushed her to VVC Short Pump, where our ER team immediately jumped into action.
Apryl shared:
“They took her into the ER immediately upon my arrival and were thorough and professional. Everything turned out ok, and I was able to take her home.”
She also described our team as “incredibly knowledgeable, kind, generous, and amazing.”

Lucy is a very special 8-year-old Beagle/Jack Russell rescue. After surviving a serious car accident and spending five days lost in the woods, she and Apryl share an extra-special bond.

We’re so grateful Apryl trusted our team with her girl and took the time to share her experience. We’re so happy Lucy is home safe where she belongs!

🐾 Charlie is back to his old self! And we couldn’t be happier. 💙

Rick left us this sweet review last week:
“The teams here are second to none! Our poor Charlie is back to his old self thanks to the care they gave. Highly recommend!”
We’ll take that as a 5-star Charlie update! 😂🐾

Thank you, Rick, for trusting our team with Charlie’s care. Nothing makes us happier than seeing our patients feeling like themselves again!

🐾 Chevy’s Cancer Journey: Fighting With Love 💙

Meet Chevy, a 9-year-old Rottweiler, registered service K9, and a very special member of his family.
For eight years, Chevy has been by his dad’s side, and he has even saved his life twice by detecting dangerous changes in his diabetes while he slept. He’s also known throughout Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, and surrounding communities for the comfort and joy he brings to veterans, people with disabilities, and everyone lucky enough to meet him.

Now, Chevy is facing a difficult diagnosis: grade 3 soft tissue sarcoma.

After a mass on his ribs was removed and returned as a high-grade sarcoma, Chevy’s family met with Dr. Picone and our Oncology team to discuss the best path forward. Because grade 3 soft tissue sarcomas can be aggressive and carry a significant risk of spreading, Chevy has started chemotherapy. He recently received his first dose of doxorubicin, with Dr. Picone and the Oncology team closely monitoring him throughout his treatment.

Michael, one of our veterinary assistants, met Chevy during his visit, and it didn’t take long for Chevy to make another friend. There’s just something about this boy that seems to win people over wherever he goes.

His family says they’ve never met anyone who didn’t fall in love with him within minutes and we can understand why.
We’re honored to be part of Chevy’s care and to walk alongside him and his family through this journey. Keep fighting, Chevy. You’ve got a whole team behind you. 💙🐾

❤️ From Critical to Home & Healthy ❤️

There’s no greater reward than knowing a patient made it home to the family who loves them.
When this sweet cat arrived at VVC, he was in critical condition, and his family had been told they weren’t sure he would make it. After 7 days of intensive care, Dr. Honious, Dr. Aktay, and our entire team never stopped fighting for him.

His family shared that they were able to visit him every night, watched our team care for other patients with compassion, and felt supported every step of the way, including when finances became a concern.

Their words mean so much to us:
“Dr. Honious and Dr. Aktay SAVED his life. … They loved on him and treated him with so much care.”

Today, he’s home and healthy. ❤️
Thank you for trusting us with your baby and for taking the time to share your experience. We are so grateful to be part of his story and even more grateful that he got to go home. 🐾

🔔🐾 R***r Rang the End-of-Treatment Bell! 🐾🔔

From a life-changing diagnosis to a limb amputation, chemotherapy, and now ringing the End-of-Treatment Bell, R***r has come a LONG way.

This 11-year-old Australian Shepherd came to Short Pump VVC after being diagnosed with a bone tumor in his hind limb. On May 4, Dr. Mercurio and our Surgery team performed his limb amputation, allowing R***r to move forward with treatment.
From there, our Oncology team, led by Dr. Picone, took over the next chapter of his care with chemotherapy. R***r received treatments while our teams closely monitored his bloodwork and overall health throughout his treatment.
And on August 10, 2026, R***r got to do something pretty special… he rang the End-of-Treatment Bell! 🔔❤️

Most importantly? R***r is doing great, adjusting well to life on three legs and continuing to enjoy his days.
R***r’s journey is a beautiful example of what happens when specialty teams work together with one goal: giving pets more time with the people who love them.
